Student Rec Center

I'm curious about the student rec center at Vanderbilt, as we didn't see it on our tour. Looking at the map, it seems as though it's off to one side of campus, and not very convenient to get to. Is the walk as far as it seems? Do students use it? What's it like on the inside? Any comments? It seems to me, that as nice as it may be, if it's not convenient.....

It isn't very far at all from where my son, a freshman, lives. However, next year freshmen will be over at Peabody, so that would be a bit further away.

I've only been inside once, so I'm pretty ignorant, but it seemed nice and well-used.

Compared to the universities I attended, the Vanderbilt campus is very compact, even when including Peabody. The weather is mild, so it isn't a big deal to walk a bit (IMO).

Although it is on the periphery of campus, the walk is a little exercise in itself to help students avoid the freshman 15. I seem to remember seeing something about students having a limited amount of exercise equipment to use in the basement of some dorms (Towers maybe?). Could some current students address this as an option for those looking for a late night break from studying and not wanting to venture out so late at night? Am I dreaming and if I'm not what's available and where?

The only place I know if is on Peabody/Commons. They have equipment in a couple of the dorms.

In addition to the Rec by the athletic fields the Commons Center (Peabody / freshman dorms, beginning next fall) has workout rooms.

I lived on Peabody during my sophomore year and found no issue going to the Rec - walking, it's a 10 minute straight shot.

the weights are not good, but they get the job done. i had been lifting for a few years prior to coming here, so im more critical than most people bc i know a nice facility when i see one (and i dont on campus). the remainder of the equipment is fine. its about a 15 minute walk from the opposite end of campus, and probably around 10 min for most students.
