If you sign into Oasis, you'll see what you got & what you got bumped from. If you were bumped, you'll be able to add classes starting July 28. On August 4th, the registration period is open for all students, but no waiting lists (and I can't tell ... but I don't think you can actually do any changes ... just additions). On August 25th, drop/add opens. This is the time you can make changes & get on a waiting list for a closed class.

It sounds like there are some of you who didn't get what you hoped for. My D will be happy to hear that ... misery loves company! She didn't get to even try for a parking permit because her info wasn't in the system right (she will be a sophomore transfer), then she got bumped from 2 classes. Not a happy start to things. She'll live, though!

I hate the registration system not b/c I didn't get what I wanted but b/c its a stupid system. I got ALL the classes I wanted but not in the time slots I wanted. Why? Because their system "evens" out the sections instead of giving students their choice of time slot. The times I wanted ARE STILL OPEN and they ARENT FULL, but they give you the times THEY want you to have to even things out. Its dumb. I did get bumped from one class that I didn't really want to take and was considering dropping anyways so I will be able to get the times I want on the 28th, but its just dumb that you have to do that.

At least I got my parking permit already and all of the classes I want...but I have to even out the times simply b/c of the dumb computer registration system.

Does anyone else hate that?

How do you know that there are open sections? Where can you go to see what is open? That will be helpful for my D as she tries to figure out how to fix her schedule.

If you go into Oasis and you use command prompt SHOW______ whatever course number she's interested in it will say "open" or "closed" etc. That's how you know its open. Unless she was BUMPED from a course she was probably just moved from the section she wanted to a section she didn't want b/c of the computer system. Its not fun and creates more work for the students and the registrar staff, but whatever.

She was bumped from 2 completely, and she had the time switched (to an earlier time) in another. When she goes to fill the slots for the bumped classes, will she also be able to switch her time for the other? Or does she have to wait for regular registration ... or for drop/add ... to make that kind of change?

I know it's a pain. However, I worked as an Assistant Registrar long ago. It's REALLY hard to schedule classes at a college ... there are so many parameters. I was at a small college, and it was hard enough to set things up so that the students who HAD to have a class could get it. Oasis doesn't seem optimal, but a lot of colleges use it, so it must be one of the better systems available.

And about you being an asst. registrar. I understand that, but students when they register register for the classes for a REASON...to change them out of certain sections simply to "balance" them out is just not something that should be done. I really dont think Oasis is optimal at all. I think that there should be another system and there is another system, as I know from my experiences, and I think that registration based on a quasi-first-come-first-serve basis is what is best. I mean if the section is not closed and full then students should be able to stay in the section of his/her choice, not be moved around. Maybe you disagree...I just think that its something that should not happen.

What classes were your daughter bumped from?

Oh, I don't disagree at all! I just know that there probably is no perfect system & this might be the best Vanderbilt can get for their needs. Maybe not, though. I don't know! One thing, though, is that moving people into other time slots is something done by the computer in an attempt to balance classes so that they can run enough sections. Not fair to the person ... but probably best from the system point of view.

She was bumped from a writing class ... the only one she was remotely interested in taking. However, she might actually not have to take that writing class, since she still hasn't heard for sure if she's getting writing credit for a seminar-type class she did at her school last year (if she gets credit, her writing requirements would be done). The other class was sociology 201.

Just an FYI...You are required to take at least ONE writing course at Vanderbilt even if you are transferring in enough writing credits.

Also, any AP classes wont count toward AXLE I was told. So if she has that she wont get AXLE credit for them.

You're right about needing one 100 level W course no matter what. I had forgotten about that (she didn't, though). She does know about the AP thing. "Free credit" only, with nothing counting toward AXLE. Fortunately, her freshman year credits fulfill a lot of the AXLE requirements (since her old school also had distribution requirements).

I dont understand the 100W course either. If I take 2 200W courses they wont fulfill both requirements? That makes little since to me...but then again, so does the AP not counting LOL. That's ok the courses I wanted to take in Anthropology and Philosophy fulfill everything I need really.

What's your D's schedule like for fall/what's her major?

The writing requirement is strange. I can't quite figure out why a 100 level is required. You'd think a 200 should be equally acceptable. She'd like to take an anthropology course to fulfill the writing requirement ... but it's a 200. The W courses that really interest her seem to be 200s. A lot of schools have weird requirements. Guess they make sense to someone!

She's a soc major & is looking into various minors, so she has the kind of schedule the science majors think is lame. She's already taken the basic get-it-out-of-the-way-stuff (calc, bio, language, various intro classes). She'll be taking a soc class, a history class, an accounting class, and ... whatever else she ends up with. She's been checking out open classes & ratemyprofessor.

What about you?

Yeah I dont get what the impact is of a 100W class when you can/desire to take a 200W class.
