Movies and concerts on campus or nearby

Son plans to major in BME, but movies are a passion of his. Has been an active member of school's Movie Critics Club, and is looking for a campus that shows movies as part of free or low priced entertainment for students. Also looking for a campus that has a movie theater nearby, hopefully walking distance in a safe neighborhood, one that shows the latest flicks, but also would enjoy a more artsy type theater as well. Wide range of interests.

Does Vanderbilt, or its surrounding area, offer this type of entertainment for students?

Also, any concerts on campus, or at nearby clubs?

I know Nashville is known for the Grand Ole Opry, but do rock acts perform as well?

Yes there a indie film theater around the block... And yes there'S concerts. How does jay-z sound??????? If that's not enough apply to nyu

There is every kind of music in nashville and many different venues. The Exit In is within walking distance Exit In - Nashville's Premier Live Music Venue.

There is so much great music in Nashville . Exit/Inn is a favorite for my D and her friends. There are other great venues around. She has been to the Reimann a couple times, which is a GREAT place for music, although more expensive than most other venues in the area. She has been very disappointed in Vandy's choices of acts to bring to campus ... she has had no interest in any of the acts for Quake or Rites of Spring (although she probably would have gone to O.A.R. if she wasn't studying abroad this semester). When we picked up D at the end of the year, there were several good rock bands in the area (not "big" acts, but good ones just the same).

The Belmont Theater has independent movies, I think. That's close by.

Kelsmom is right about everything, but she spelled the names kind of wrong. She mentioned the Exit/In, Ryman Auditorium, and the Belcourt.

Hopefully this will help if you're trying to google them and having no luck. =)

A friend who is a freshman told his mom to tell me that son won't have too much time to go off campus because of the work load, so don't worry about being in a city. However, the appeal of a city is that there are other things to do besides tailgating for a football game.

He's just hoping to catch a quick movie on the weekend or hear some music. It would be great if acts do come to campus, so we don't have to worry about him going into the "big bad city".

Well, sorry, Jay-Z is probably not his speed, but he really likes the Killers, Modest Mouse, and Muse, so more that kind. And he doesn't really care if it's big name. He's just a well rounded, non jock, looking for a school with biomedical engineering, in an urban environment, with less than 15K student population.

Nashville the bid, bad city?! I work in Detroit ... so maybe that affects my perception ... but I am not at all worried about D going out & about in Nashville.

Truly, there is plenty to do. It's a great city with lots going on.

I was just joking. I know Nashville is not a big, bad city. Hey, we live in New Orleans. We have more murders in one weekend than most cities have in ten years.

We talked at length to the Vandy rep tonight, and son really liked it.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture. And this is me only picking the big names out at the biggest venue in Nashville, there are definitely more indie places around. Always something for everyone.

Montegut, my son attends Vandy and LOVES music. He has a basket of ticket stubs from the shows he went to in the last year! There is a so much music of all kinds in the area; even the bands at parties are a big step up from most cities (maybe not New Orleans) because of all the talent.

For alternative music my Vandy daughter likes Rocketown. It's a skatepark/concert venue in downtown Nashville that holds weekly concerts with several bands in each concert. The tickets range from very cheap ($5) to moderate (around $30) depending on the headliner. She has mentioned seeing Motion City Soundtrack and Secondhand Serenade there. They have a nice website with the shows for this fall. I recognized a few upcoming headliners - Relient K, The Academy Is.., Boys Like Girls. Might be something to check out.
