Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - No interviews available when D checked (about a month prior to visit)
Information Session:
Yes - AO was very animated and excited about AU. She is an alum, so had insight into undergrad life.
Campus Tour:
No - No official tours were available since it was the week prior to classes starting. We managed to find a volunteer through CC who took us around campus. Great private tour!
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
Private tour arranged through CC. It was Freshmen Welcome Week, so lots of activity on campus, many friendly upperclassmen.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Admission office staff helpful and friendly. Honors College staff invited us in from the hallway and spent over an hour discussing AU opportunities with us.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
First week of school, so everything was in great shape. Some students were moving in, and it looked well organized.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Buildings all appear new. Some classrooms had new furniture. There was some construction within buildings, probably will be completed prior to classes beginning the next week.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
We only looked into rooms through windows, but they appear good-sized. I hear many doubles become forced triples each year. Rooms aren't that big!
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Campus is in a very safe part of DC. Security was present all around campus, mainly directing traffic for students who were moving in. Not much traffic - just one road through campus.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Beautiful part of DC. AU Shuttle to Tenleytown for Metro and shops (CVS, Best Buy, Whole Foods)
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Campus is in a beautiful part of DC, near Embassy Row and National Cathedral. Metro is only 15 minute walk or shuttle bus, and then you have all of DC to explore. Many intership possibilities.
Campus Visit Notes for American University
Visit Description:
Information session was held in the Green Room at Katzen Arts Center. We took a cab to campus, and found the building just fine, but had to ask where Admissions was located (no signage in lobby) Strange feel to Green Room area - not the typical admissions office. Information session was very good, upbeat AO. No official tours available that week, but there is a self-guided tour map. Campus is quite compact and easy to navigate. There are only 8 dorms on campus, all high-rise. Academic buildings are clustered around the quad, and very well-kept. Construction of new SIS building is underway, but does not impact traffic thru campus. We ate lunch in the student cafeteria - great food, fresh, lots of variety (even someone to scoop ice cream for you!)
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Holiday Inn - Georgetown. We did not have a car, so complimentary shuttle was very convenient and drivers were very friendly.
