Amherst is a really small town, so when I stayed for a longer period of time in July '06, the whole place seemed dead. I bet it's a lot better when the schools are all in session, but don't expect a metropolis.

Campus Visit Notes for Amherst College

Visit Description:

Overall was very impressed by entire campus and region. Love the school and the professors I had during my summer program (primarily interacted with Prof. Stavans). Met with several alums and current students and everyone seemed very happy about their college choice. The whole campus is littered with trees and grass and the whole atmosphere is extremely relaxed. Amherst is also revamping much of the older spaces on campus to include more modern areas and better facilities.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Easy access to Boston & Hartford airports.
