Visit Activities:
Campus Tour:
Yes - My dad and I did a full tour of the campus that was about an hour and a half long. It's mostly outdoor so where a jacket and walking shoes, because it's almost always windy in SLO.
Classroom Visit:
Yes - Brief classroom visit as part of the tour. Classrooms were neat and seemed modern. Very nice computer systems, a lot were Macs I noticed.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
No one really talked to us but they all seemed friendly to each other. They seemed just like high school students, not too "grown up" but still not as childish.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
About half of the campus has been either recently renovated or have just been added on in the last 5 years. Most of the older parts of campus are all concrete and kind of ugly but tolerable.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Everything was very clean and well kept. I did not see one piece of trash on the ground.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
They seem far away from the actual campus and we did not get close to them but the non-Freshman housing was brand new and absolutely gorgeous. Freshman housing was out of date but again, tolerable.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
I felt very safe on campus, there were many campus cops around. The tour guide even mentioned that they give out tickets on a regular basis. There are even emergency alert buttons around campus.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
I was happily surprised by Cal Poly SLO. It has a tight knit feel but is still medium/large sized (19,000 students, 6,000 acres).
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Beautiful green hills everywhere, lots of hiking, mountain biking, and other such activities.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Lots of shopping, HORRIBLE parking, lots of restaurants and such.
Campus Visit Notes for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo
Visit Description:
I went this week for Spring Tours and was in a group of about 25 people. The tour guide was funny and knowledgeable. It was very windy, the tour guide said that high winds are common on the central coast. Lots of bikes but mostly students on foot, it costs $315 for a school year parking pass. It was $6 for Spring Tour parking, which was ridiculous so I would recommend trying to find another option.
