Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Very informative, specifies the core curriculum and exactly how it is assembled and how students can customize it within certain bounds. Focuses on student-faculty interaction. A lot of "Colgate
Campus Tour:
Yes - Colgate is gorgeous. It is rated by the Princeton Review as 3rd prettiest campus in the US, and it isn't a surprise. New buildings keep in the beautiful style of the old, yet feel fresh and clean
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
Students were really friendly. The few I talked to genuinly wanted me to go to Colgate. I was impressed with the number of smiles and "hello's" I got walking around campus after the tou
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Staff was really friendly, but then it's their job isn't it?
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
As mentioned above, Colgate is the most beautiful campus I have ever seen.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Despite old buildings in a traditional style, Colgate has amazing facilities. The study spaces are comfortable and feel spacious, modern, and inviting. The bathrooms are clean, the floors are shiny.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
The rooms obviously vary by dorm, but the dorms we saw were fairly normal. While the dorm building was amazing, the room was what one would expect of a college dorm.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
I had no problems, and they say that the Blue "Rape" Phones have never been used except some bozo checking a hockey score.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
I could not have been more impressed with Colgate. It was by far the best experience of any school I visited. People in other forums debating between Colgate and elsewhere need look no further.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Rural town. Very nicely upkept. Basically a traditional East Coast rural town with homes and shops and the rest.
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
I rated this a 3 because it depends what you like. Big city club scene? Wrong school for you. Local bar and lots of beer? Hamilton will work for you. I personally was charmed by the little village.
Campus Visit Notes for Colgate University
Visit Description:
Visiting Colgate was my best college trip experience. The campus was beautiful (cannot be reiterated enough) and the students were awesome. The school has a jock-prep reputation, and though I did see a little bit of that, it was not nearly as prevalent as I had expected.
My tour guide was apparently Mrs. Popularity because our tour was interrupted 17 times by people around campus that were saying hi. It was nice to see that it was a small community, but it was funny all the same.
One thing about Colgate - they are obsessed with the number 13.
The legend goes that the school was started by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers. The zip code is 13346, 13 and 3+4+6 = 13. The area code 315 contains a backwards 13. I will graduate college (Colgate hopefully) in 2013. They do not let you forget it.
The only problem? My favorite number is 12. Am I just below Colgate's standard? I hope not!
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
If you go to Hamilton, you absolutely must stay at the Colgate Inn. It is so comfy and makes visiting Colgate a complete experience.
