Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - Perhaps because it was Dartmouth's graduation weekend, there was only one other person in the info session, so we three had a very personal chat.
Information Session:
Yes - The session presenter gave the other visitor and me a lot of personal insight. She asked us lots about ourselves and made us feel welcome. Best info session I had.
Campus Tour:
Yes - My older sister was graduating from Darmouth, and I am interested in going there. While my family was there for graduation, I didn't go on the formal campus tour; my sister showed me around.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
For an Ivy, there are lots of normal, non-snobby kids around. Friendly and helpful.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
The info session presenter was super friendly, and so was everyone else. Every time I went there, people treated me like I was an invited guest.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
If you like trees and lots of natural beauty, this is the place for you! Campus lies along the CT River and is drop-dead gorgeous!
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Even when we weren't there for graduation, everything looked well cared for. Summer construction was going on, but existing buildings were neat and in shape.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
The first one I stayed in lacked a/c, but had big windows. Even on top floor, I was comfortable. At graduation we stayed in a different (newer) one that DID have a/c and was great.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Usual blue lights and escorts, but my sister said she never felt scared, even when walking alone at night, and not much bad stuff happens in Hanover anyhow. Very safe campus.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Loved it so much that I applied there! I can very easily see myself living there 4 years.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Quaint New England college town with trendy stores and restaurants next to campus. Homes are well-kept. Students can safely rent houses off-campus. Quiet compared to some other Ivies.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Hanover has lots of stores and restaurants, and West Lebanon (next town) offers more, including an airport. We never felt isolated.
Campus Visit Notes for Dartmouth College
Visit Description:
Okay, so I am very partial because my sister went to Dartmouth and we were there 4 times, which was NOT enough! First time was when my sister visited Dartmouth to see if she'd like it. It rained like crazy, so my other sister and I stayed in the car rather than tour campus in the rain. Touring sister LOVED it in spite of the rain. We drove her there for freshman year and it rained again. Bring an umbrella! End of her freshman year we drove back to pick her up and I stayed in her substance-free dorm, met her friends, and had the time of my life! Didn't get back to Hanover until graduation in June, 2008. Sister lived in a rented house with some girlfriends, so I stayed with my sister and our parents stayed in a hotel. I did the info session and there was only 1 other student visiting that day! The presenter made it very casual and welcoming, very friendly. The other visitor and I left with positive feelings about Dartmouth. Even if I had never been there before that day, I would have definitely applied at Dartmouth because of how the campus looks, its academics, and the warm way I was treated in the information session.
One of the BEST things I did was sleep outside on the Dartmouth green the night before graduation. Seats are first-come, so my oldest sister and I, with pillows and blankets, parked ourselves in the front row at 1:00 a.m. to save the entire front row of a section right behind the graduates. Thank God it didn't rain that night!! By 3:00 there were more people who were paid to save seats for others. Someone brought a laptop and we watched movies together. By 6:30 the best seats were taken, and we were VERY glad to have that front row!
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We have stayed at the Days Inn and Sunset Motor Lodge. Days Inn is fine and less $$ than some other places. Sunset Motor Lodge is clean, quiet, close, a good price, and GORGEOUS view of CT river.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
If money's no object eat at the Hanover Inn. We ate there only once, their graduation dinner, and everyone loved it. Have breakfast at Lou's, and leave room for their pie. Molly's is go
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Campus parking's limited. City has a parking lot nearby, but it's small. Get there early for time to find a spot. TONS of outdoor activities. Dartmouth Coach bus direct to Boston Logan Airp
