Campus Visit Notes for Dartmouth College
Visit Description:
Good sell on the "compromise" aspect of the school - all the best parts of a small liberal arts college combined with the best parts of a larger university.
Our pre-med tour guide gave off a somewhat negative pre-professional, non-intellectual vibe, as he talked about having to take distribution requirements to "get them out of the way". I suspect, though, this was more the individual than reflective of the school in general.
Best (worst?) part of the tour? We were stopped in front of a fraternity talking about housing when two brothers brought out 4 huge clear garbage bags full of - you guessed it - beer cans. On a Wednesday. Our guide said "OK - time to move along now", with a smirk. To some this might sound like an ideal place - to me (and to S) it seemed like the goal here was only to have fun while you're getting you're degree so later you can do what you REALLY want to do, ie go to med school. Very little about education for education's sake.
