Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - Davidson does not offer evaluative interviews.
Information Session:
Yes - I had an individual info session with an admissions counselor. She was very nice and helpful and gave me a contact card for a girl who is in charge of the dance company on campus.
Campus Tour:
Yes - The tour guide was very friendly. The other two girls were rising juniors, which was slightly annoying. The tour was good though, despite the heat!
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
People at Davidson were SO NICE. I love them! One girl came up behind our tour guide and hugged her...clearly they're all very close.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
They were all very, very friendly. The receptionist in the admissions office helped my dad and me find a great place to eat after the info session.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
The campus is very pretty, probably not as pretty as other campuses I've seen (William and Mary, Washington and Lee) but it is still very nice.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
I could complain a little bit, but generally everything was clean. Maybe they need a little modernization in some parts.
Dormitories:
5 - Excellent
The dorms are all big. FREE LAUNDRY SERVICE!!! ALL DORMS HAVE A/C!!!!!!!!!! All of them have had/are in the process of recent renovation.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
It seemed very safe. My dad, of course, had to ask how many bluelights were on campus...
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Love. I want to go to Davidson so badly. It was beautiful and had a very welcoming vibe.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
It's a cute little town area.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
It's a typical college town consisting of a couple of shops, a pharmacy, a soda shop, and some restaurants on one street. It's pretty much what I want though.
Campus Visit Notes for Davidson College
Visit Description:
So my dad and I were coming from our hotel in Williamsburg, VA (I was visiting William and Mary), and it was about a 5.5 hour drive. We weren't sure if my tour was at 1 or 2...long story...but we ended up having a couple of predicaments: A) We couldn't figure out how to get the gas tank open in our rental car, then once we realized how to open it, it wouldn't open. Then we had to go to an auto parts store for him to open it with a knife. B) About 15 minutes away from the campus, there was road construction with only 1 lane open for both ways of traffic.
Anyway, we got to the Davidson campus at 12:55. My tour ended up being at 1pm, so we were VERY lucky!!! We were led around campus by an international student, which was pretty interesting. There were two other girls in my tour, one of which had the most obnoxious, annoying father who talked on his cell phone the whole time. My father just looked intimidating and asked about the number of bluelights, but it wasn't so bad. I felt like my tour guide gave us a good tour of the school, but I left with many questions lingering about the actual life of the campus. It seemed, though, to be very welcoming and close-knit, which is what I'm looking for. She did tell us about her and her professor's close friendship, which was nice to hear.
Afterward, I had an individual information session with one of the admissions counselors. She was a total sweetheart and basically just explained the 5 Priorities of the Davidson application process (1: Rigor, 2: GPA, 3: Essays/Recs, etc. Look on their website.) She told me all about their psychology program, since she was a psych major there. She also told me all about the Dance Ensemble and Gamut Dance Company, and gave me a girl's card to contact about dance. So all in all, most of my information came from the counselor. Everything she told me, I LOVED to hear. She was very, very helpful.
I loved the Davidson campus. I was sort of grateful to leave, though, because my dad and I hadn't eaten since a couple pieces of fruit in the morning (and it was nearing 4pm).
We went back to visit the campus again and ended up watching the World Cup game in the Alvarez Student Union for about 20 minutes...I think they probably thought we were crazy for randomly crashing on their couches and watching their giant flat screen. We came back later to visit the town, and of course it started storming. We did get a nice look at the nearby mall, which is adorable, and we saw Toy Story 3 (great movie!).
Any questions about my visit to Davidson, please feel free to PM me! I hope this helped you. Davidson is a wonderful school and I hope to be honored as a student there in 2015...fingers crossed.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott about 10 minutes away. We saw the Davidson Inn in the town though, and it looked very nice! We wish we had stayed there.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Brickhouse Tavern=so good! It's right across the street from the admissions office.
