Visit Activities:

Admissions Interview: Yes - My son and I were very impressed that they had his name on a board welcoming him. Both my son and I met with the counselor - very friendly - a casual, conversational interview.

Information Session: No - There really wasn't an information session and since my son was the only one visiting there that day, it would have been odd.

Campus Tour: Yes - A very enthusiastic guide showed us absolutely everything on campus, including the farm.

Overnight Visit: Yes - The Two Editors Inn was free and I'm not sure what other accommodations were available relatively close to the campus. It was nice but at night had a very "The Shining" vibe.

Campus:

Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:

There was a small-town "how ya doin?" atmosphere. Our guide seemed to know everyone but then again, everyone seemed to know everyone. It's a small school.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
I don't think any of the staff could have been friendlier. Very welcoming environment.

Appearance of Campus:

It's a beautiful campus stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:

Even the farm was clean! Green Mountain is working toward self-sustainability. Very impressive.

Dormitories:

My son is hoping for a single and it didn't seem like that was much of an option for a freshman. Rooms were okay in size.

Security/Safety:

Seemed fine although we were only there one night and one morning.

Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent

Friendly people, very 'green,' and my son could see himself going here. He's focusing on environmental science/agriculture so this school really matches those interests.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair

If you're trying to get away from it all, this college is for you. The area immediately around campus is fine. After you go about 200 feet away from campus, things change.

City/Town/Community:
1 - Poor
1 - Poor
I'm not sure you could even call this a town. It was incredibly small with just a few restaurants and a store or two. Very apparent who's a student and who's a 'townie.' We we

Campus Visit Notes for Green Mountain College

Visit Description:

Our visit to the farm occurred during the rooster "harvesting." For those unfamiliar with this, they put a rooster head down through a funnel and then slice its throat. Probably one of the more unusual events we've had during our college tours...

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

The closest town is Rutland. We didn't get there but it's got to be bigger with more conveniences than Poultney!
