Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Informative, but very structured. Set as an informal discussion between two graduates, but it came off as fake and a little weird.
Campus Tour:
Yes - I enjoyed the campus tour. Harvard is a school rich with history and architecture. Visting during the fall highlighted the natural beauty of the area, but it was a little small and unorganized.
Classroom Visit:
Yes - Visted a few, and all of them were very nice. They ranged from extremely large to medium sized.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
My tour guide, a sophomore female, was very nice and talkative. She seemed genuinely interested in all of the visitors, and shared a lot about herself and the school.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
3 - Good
Less warm than many of the students, but they were always helpful and ready to answer questions.
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
The campus has some nice parts with rich architecture, but other buildings, such as the technology lab, seem out of place. The space was crowded and not as nice as many of the other Ivies overall.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Inside all of the staff and classrooms that I saw everything seemed to be neatly organized and cleaned, but it was all a little crowded.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
Not as abounding with natural beauty as Princeton or Amherst, but the campus and the Yard had a feeling of vibrancy and excitement. The students and staff were intelligent, friendly, and diverse.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair
The area around Harvard is fair. Cramped and too busy, but it still has some areas of relative peace.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
I love Cambridge, especially when compared to New Haven or Princeton. It is small and somewhat crowded, but it has a lot to offer.
Campus Visit Notes for Harvard University
Visit Description:
I was really excited to visit Harvard because it has always been a place such rich history and academia. The students surpassed my expectations and really helped to dissolve much of the "rich genius" stereotypes that surrounded the school. I wasn't thoroughly impressed by the campus, but I did really love the buildings, trees, and Harvard Yard. The tour guide said all the right things and described Harvard as a place where "students will stay up late having friendly debates over Roman history or obscure math theories for hours, and even if you don't know everything about a certain subject they will always value your opinion". This was easily one of my favorite college visits, and I will probably be going back to Harvard before I make my final college decisions.
