Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Presented by an admissions rep and a rising senior. Some great information, but a boring presentation.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Tour guide was an interesting guy from El Salvador -a Women's/Gender/Sexuality Studies major. He asked people if they had questions, and if no one did, he asked questions he'd prepared his
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
There were four tour guides to choose from - they all seemed friendly. Our tour guide found a friend on campus who wanted said she wanted to join the tour but didn't.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Everyone was friendly enough - we really didn't have much interaction with any of the staff.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
A lovely campus - red brick buildings surrounding lots of green. Campus is quite spread out compared to the other schools we visited. Lots of people around, plus three other tours at the same time.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Everything looked clean and well cared for.
Dormitories:
Only saw the outside. All freshmen live in Harvard Square surrounding the green. After that, the students move into the houses. Up to 8 friends can create a block & move into the same house.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Blue light system and campus security/Cambridge police. It's a city, so care is needed, I'm sure - but it's a nice area.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
A lovely campus with so much history. We all loved it.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Cambridge had so many shops and restaurants - a great place to attend college.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Just a T ride into Boston - so a great area.
Campus Visit Notes for Harvard University
Visit Description:
The info session could have been more lively, but it was informative, so definitely worth attending.
The tour involved some long periods of silence where we just walked fast to get to our next stop. That was a little strange as all of our other tour guides talked non-stop. But he was running late as the tour started 10 minutes late.
We only got to go in one building on the tour - and I forgot the name - but it's where the dining hall is located (couldn't see that as it was locked). It's in a beautiful building with lots of stained glass - like a church, but it isn't a church.
At the end of the tour, D waited around to ask the tour guide if there was a swimming test required - there isn't!
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Stayed at the Hyatt Place in Medford, about 10-15 minutes away by car. The room was fine but the breakfast was not.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Ate lunch at the Border Cafe, a Mexican restaurant on Church St. around the corner from the admissions office - very good and fast service. Lizzie's ice cream afterwards - but not the chocolate.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Parked in a lot on Church St. Someone told us it was $30/hour, but it only cost us about $5.00 and we were there for close to 3 1/2 hours.
