Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Was not very helpful. It was very large with the majority of the session being dominated by two students who constantly asked about music.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Tour guide was nice but group was very large making it difficult to hear.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
Everyone seemed quite friendly, though I visited in the summer so this may not be a representative group.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Same as above.
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
It was a nice campus in that it had nice lawns, but it was nothing breathtaking. Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore, University of Delaware, and Goucher had much nicer campuses.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
2 - Fair
The buildings were nice on the outside but were dirty and musty smelling on the inside. Of course, this could be due in part to the fact that it was summer.
Dormitories:
1 - Poor
AWFUL. I have seem some pretty terrible dorms and this was easily the worst. The "nice" dorms were smaller than a walk-in closet and were flat out depressing. I have heard apts. are even wor
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
Seemed good to me, many blue lights and security guards.
Overall Campus Impression:
2 - Fair
I was not particularly fond of this school. The air of campus was very intimidating to me and I did not feel it was very "learning focused" which was disappointing to me.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
Charming towns.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Posh suburbs.
Campus Visit Notes for Haverford College
Visit Description:
I was very excited about Haverford as a whole. But, the tour and info session completely turned me off - I am not even considering applying any more. The biggest turn off was the description of the honor code. At many other schools with a stringent honor code, they describe the purpose of it as a way to make learning personal and about you rather than about getting the best grades. At Haverford, my tour guide seemed to only stress it in terms of not cheating and some social conflict resolution - it seemed to have very little to do with learning and social justice. I couldn't figure out why it would be useful to have unproctored exams (I got my answer at Bryn Mawr).
The other thing that was disappointing to me was the seeming lack of emphasis on learning that I gathered from Swarthmore. There really weren't any mentions of intellectualism other than saying "We have a fabulous Biology program..."
I really wished I had liked Haverford more. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was a fine school, but I came out of the visit feeling as though it didn't have much that was unique to offer. It didn't seem to be worth 50k each year.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Ate at Chipotle and visited this charming place called Hope's Cookies.
