Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - The session was very helpful. It took place in a theater with a bunch of people present. They gave interesting statistics and great information. I wasn't disappointed at all.
Campus Tour:
Yes - We walked around campus starting from the Student Union heading to the other side of campus. The tour guide was actually a person who worked in admissions. He answered every question clearly.
Classroom Visit:
No - Even though I didn't do a classroom visit, I got to see a class going on while I was on the campus tour. I saw a small film class sitting down on the floor listening to an instructor. Looked good
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
We passed some students on the campus tour. No one came up to say hi or even give a small smile. You can't really judge by this.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to talk to any professors. The tour guide and people working in the Student Union did seem nice though.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
The campus is extremely organized. Residence halls are on one side of Hempstead Turnpike while classes are on the other. It's connected by two bridges so no need to cross the busy street.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
We only were able to get into 5 buildings but from what I saw, it was very clean. The business building looked like it was brand new inside. They do a good job cleaning everything up.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
I didn't get to see the dorms. However, they did look nice from the outside. They are tall tower buildings where you get a good view of Long Island.
Security/Safety:
1 - Poor
There was no officers in view. I was wondering where they were especially considering one part of Hempstead isn't safe to be(ghetto). Going more down the turnpike, you'll see the ghetto.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
I liked the campus. It's a medium sized campus with lots of parking. The only thing I was disappointed in was campus safety. Other than that, it's a decent school with a lot to offer.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair
One side of Hofstra isn't safe while the other side is. If you go more down Hempstead Turnpike, you're heading into the ghetto. Don't go there. The other side is great..has many things
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
I live close so I should know. For the most part, it is a good city. You got Nassua Coliseum so you can get a discount if you're a student. Many restaurants/Starsbucks on Hempstead Turnpike.
Campus Visit Notes for Hofstra University
Visit Description:
Me and my mom started out in the Student Union. We got Hofstra pamphlets from a nearby table while waiting for the tour to begin. They gave us a Hofstra bag to put things in. Soon, we finally start walking on the bridge to across campus. We were with a small group of people with a tourguide/admissions officer leading the way. He showed us the Frank Zarb business building and the School of Communications building. I was impressed with both. Then, we went to the Informations Session where they gave us good information about the college. The students ended up being apart from their parents after the session. The students headed to backwards to the Student Union and back into this room I wasn't familiar with. Meanwhile, the parents go their own little session with Hofstra staff and got the opportunity to ask questions about financial aid and other things. I liked seeing the other prospective students to see who might've been my future classmates. Who knows. We all got to ask questions and didn't rush us at all. It was even humorous at times. I felt very welcomed. They gave us free food afterwards while reuniting with our parents. Different school booths were scattered around this big room so there was a chance for everyone to ask questions to representatives of specific majors. If you're an out of state person, GO VISIT THE SCHOOL! Reviews don't help all the time.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
The Marriott is literally a minute away from campus. I highly recommend it. I've seen their rooms. They are very clean and have a nice sports restaurant inside with good food. A big pool is insid
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
There are tons! Cheesecake Factory is nearby at a local mall. Try to reserve a spot or you might have to wait a hour or so on weekends. If you want Italian, Beraillies is down the street from Hofstra.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
The bus goes around Long Island. There is parking on campus but I hear it gets crowded fast. Then, there's the Long Island Railroad which will get you anywhere from Bellmore to Penn Station in NY
