Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes
Campus Tour:
Yes - Only one tour guide for a LOT of students/parents. Too many people. It is spring break, but other campuses find a way to have enough guides during breaks... not sure why JHU can't.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Met with a prof someone else in our family knows in D's area of study. Much more informative and knowledgable than the tour guide. Also much more forthright about JHU strengths/weaknesses.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Dormitories:
They don't show you.
Security/Safety:
Tour guide claimed dorm doors buzz when propped open after a period of time (when she was asked if this is the case), but don't think she actually knew if they do or don't.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
Campus Visit Notes for Johns Hopkins University
Visit Description:
No one seems to have a list of these "over 300 activities" available to students on campus. The web site has a short list (maybe 30-40 items?). Documentation from the admissions office is about the same. We thought we could ask on campus about a specific area of interest... but no one knew when we asked. D said later that it seems like JHU is trying VERY hard (too hard) to appear to be a place with a strong community, but they don't get what that means. No union/student hub at all. The dining room we ate in was small and more like a restaurant than a dining hall (maybe others open when not spring break, though). We asked prof about cutthroat reputation... info session person claimed it was all false, but the prof laughed and said you couldn't have that many pre-med students being graded on a curve without having that result.
