Visit Activities:

Information Session: Yes - My admissions officer was a young, energetic woman who answered all my questions with tact and sensitivity. She flattered me quite a bit. There was no pressure.

Campus Tour: Yes - It was a grim November day, but we made the most of it.

Campus:

Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
3 - Good
From what I saw, the students are introverted and do not often talk to one another or to prospective students. An extrovert would suffocate at Maryville, but I, a loner, would feel comfortable.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
The staff was extremely courteous, although they seemed to have some organizational problems (i.e. inviting me to come the day after I requested a visit and not being prepared).

Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
The weather was depressing the day I had a formal visit, but I have seen the campus in the spring and it is gorgeous.

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
An art center is going up near the entrance to the campus, so there was some construction. Most of the lovely buildings are in great shape, with the possible exception of the shabby 60s/70s dorms.

Dormitories:
The dorms were locked the day I came.

Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
As a Knoxvillian, I am familiar with the town of Maryville. It is a peaceful, affluent community; nobody there would hurt a fly. College students are safe there.

Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
I think I would be happy there.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair
2 - Fair
Attractive, but not exciting. Awkward traffic routing leads to bottlenecks around the school.

City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
3 - Good
Quaint, quaint, quaint.

Campus Visit Notes for Maryville College

Visit Description:

Top 10 Things I Noticed About Maryville College That I Haven't Been Able To Mention:

1. There are two cafeterias; one is fast food-ish, while the other offers healthier buffet-style eating.

2. The library is tiny.

3. It's an easy campus to get around.

4. It's more liberal than one would expect (leftist bumper stickers on cars, lots of diversity-oriented extracurricular activities, a left-leaning newspaper).

5. The staff is happy to talk about all the supports Maryville has in place for LD students.

6. There is an adorable little workout room.

7. Staff members like to tell anecdotes that reveal how challenging the Maryville curriculum is (i.e. a student had to write a paper for a calculus class).

8. The college runs a Japanese kids' school on the weekends.

9. The bookstore is filled mostly with Maryville Scots swag rather than books.

10. Most of the admissions staff members are alumni or students, and school spirit seems to flow like wine.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

If you're going to Maryville College for whatever reason, leave twenty minutes early. Roads around the school are often clogged, and parking places can be hard to find.
