Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - No admissions interview.
Information Session:
No - No information session
Campus Tour:
No - I conducted my own self-tour. I visited the campus a week after MIT halted tours for the year. The Information Center has maps and a neat self guide for the campus. Definitely came in handy.
Classroom Visit:
No - Came during finals week so no.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
I got very good attitude vibes from MIT students -- even during finals week! I was trying to navigate my way to one building and an MIT student came out of no where and helped me find my way.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
The woman who worked at the Information Center was nice and helpful.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
I liked the architecture.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Campus was clean. I did not see trash or graffiti anywhere.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
I saw the dormitories and thought they looked nice from the outside. I did not go inside. Therefore, I rate this a mutual 3.
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
I saw the MIT Police truck on campus, noticed lots of bicycles, and read a full monthly crime report in The Tech. So far everything looks safe and dealt with to me. Tons of female joggers = safe.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Loved, loved, loved MIT!! Great atmosphere, nice facilities, maintained campus, friendly people, centralized buildings (Kresge, Z-Center, dormitories, Student Center, Chapel, etc), and Boston view.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
Boston was really nice and area around MIT was safe. MIT has a T station that can take one anywhere in the Cambridge or Boston area. There's always something to do.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Cambridge has a lot of locally owned shops. It is hard to find chain shops and restaurants. This was a nice aspect. Bad aspect - Harvard surprisingly had a lot of homeless camped out.
Campus Visit Notes for Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Visit Description:
I visited MIT all the way from southern California. I stayed in a hotel in Boston next to Copley Place and took the T over to Kendall/MIT (and on one occasion walked back via the Harvard Bridge). MIT was clean and well-maintained. The students were cheerful, social, and were helpful. Actually, everyone in the Boston area seemed to be that way.
I really liked that MIT was right on the Charles River front. Also, there was a centralized space for student interaction. The dorms and the Student Center were of short walking distance. The Z-Center is next door to the Student Center and added to the social factor. I did not find anything negative about MIT. I had my own campus tour since MIT ended their own tours a day before I arrived in Boston. I was able to get around just fine via a map guide created by MIT. Excellent visit overall.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
John Hancock Hotel and Conference Center in Boston (1.6 walking from MIT). Decent stay and free breakfast. Staff was really friendly.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Prudential Center restaurants. Beijing Tokyo next to MIT COOP has great calamari. Quincy Market is also great. I visited markets like Shaw's and Trader Joe's to save money.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Boston transportation is stellar! All the stations are within walking distance and take you everywhere in minutes! Easily accessible from Logan. No need for taxis. Get a Charlie Ticket and pay less.
