Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Fast-talker lead the session. In addition to the general information session, there are "academic sessions" by college, which is a nice touch.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Tour guide was one of the best I've seen. Came across as well-spoken and smart with just enough school spirit.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
I've always thought this was a pretty campus. Feels separate from the city.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Dallas Hall and Blanton were immaculate inside.
Dormitories:
2 - Fair
We didn't take the official tour, but my kids have stayed in a number of dorms on campus over the years. They're pretty common fare.
Security/Safety:
Like the bus that takes kids to Mockingbird Station so that they have access to DART.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
We've spent many a summer on the SMU campus. The main boulevard is beautiful as are many facilities, such as Dedman rec center.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
Again, we've spent a lot of time around the campus. The surrounding area is quite nice.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Dallas is huge, but SMU is like an oasis.
Campus Visit Notes for Southern Methodist University
Visit Description:
Was pleasantly surprised by the overall presentation. We had toured TCU with our older ds a couple of years ago and had a horrible experience. We expected SMU to be similar, but this tour was much more academically focused. The tour guide was great.
This is an academic safety for ds2, and he'll likely apply when the time comes.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We've eaten at Rockfish in Mockingbird Station as well as the fast-food places right across the street from campus.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Covered parking in the garage on a hot summer day was nice as was the code for free parking! Wish more schools did that. Also, thanks for the plentiful cold bottled water.
