Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Not as polished as either AU or Gtown, but fine. Like AU, GWU is all about the internships and less about the academics.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Very urban, but still has a defined campus feeling. It's personal preference whether you like this or not. Mt Vernon campus is more traditional college feeling, but isolated.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
All were nice.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
It's very urban. Again, that's personal preference. My kid was a bit put off by it and wants more green, but others may really like that.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Dormitories:
Didn't see inside; they are more like apartment buildings.
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
Though urban, it didn't feel unsafe. It's probably super safe being so close to the WH! Of course, one takes normal precautions.
Overall Campus Impression:
3 - Good
Fine for someone who likes an urban campus!
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
Nice area of DC.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
DC rocks.
Campus Visit Notes for The George Washington University
Visit Description:
Like AU, I got the feel that GWU is less about academics / life of the mind and more about look at all the internships we offer. Which is great, but like AU, I struggle with what the university has to offer outside of history / internatl relations / politics. I had my antenna up for the "rich kid" stereotype I'd heard about, and I didn't see it manifested at all. So there were some Coach bags and Burberry scarves, big deal, that hardly constitutes "rich kid" or intimidating, just normal upper middle class. The Mt Vernon campus attracted my kid, who likes more green space, but I worry it might be too isolating. I wish I could mix aspects of AU and GWU.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Doubletree Guest Suites on New Hampshire Ave just behind the Metro stop. Couldn't have been more convenient. Met needs perfectly.
