Visit Activities:

Admissions Interview: Yes - Daughter interviewed with admission counselor. Asked some interesting questions. One was: if you could sit down with any three people from history, who would they be and what would you talk about?

Information Session: Yes - Session similar to those at other schools. All info available on college website, so really just a rehash unless you hadn't visited their site - many hadn't, apparently, judging by questio

Campus Tour: Yes - Tour with current student. Lots of good info about campus and student life. Did not see dorm, but was told that all are so different seeing one wouldn't provide that much info.

Classroom Visit: Yes - Daughter sat in on English class. Said professor was friendly and very enthusiastic about topic. Students were engaged in discussion and obviously thoughtful and prepared. Daughter was very pleased.

Campus:

Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
2 - Fair
2 - Fair
Typical of big city campus; few people made eye contact or smiled in passing. When we stopped to ask directions the response was friendly and helpful. Students seemed friendly with each other.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
3 - Good
3 - Good
Staff efficient and courteous, but they have so many visitors they don't get real excited. Daughter commented that interviewer talked fast and often didn't allow time for her to say more.

Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good

Amazing campus - large and busy. Many bldgs old, but in a good way; lots of atmosphere. Science bldgs newer than humanities. Grounds very nice, but Chicago winters may negate impact.

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
All looked in good repair. Saw evidence of many maintenance workers and groundskeepers. Newer dining hall in old gym bldg -- modern conveniences but lovely old ambiance.

Dormitories:
See college website for lots of good info and pictures. Didn't see inside of dorm on tour.

Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
Lots of security call stations around campus, plus large and active campus police force. Female tour guides said they felt safe on campus, but use big city smarts when out at night.

Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
As daughter said when walking around "This is amazing!" Obvious that it's one of nation's premier institutions. Plenty to do on campus besides study.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:

Hyde Park neighborhood good, but not so nice areas also nearby.

City/Town/Community:

Chicago -- great city! Lots to do in city and easy access to downtown from campus,

Campus Visit Notes for The University of Chicago

Visit Description:

Visit to campus confirmed daughter's impressions that this is a really cool place and would be awesome to be student here.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

Stayed at Best Western River North. About 20 minutes from campus (during morning rush hour), but great discount for UofC visitors and FREE parking. Excellent location, esp. staying more than one day.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

Ate in dining hall -- good food. Plenty of restaurants available in Hyde Park.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Parking on campus tough; used hospital parking garage. Validate in Admissions office to pay only 6$ for day. Plan to walk a lot. Don't just visit the campus -- see something of Chicago.
