Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - I attended one of their presentations about the school - and I learned no new information. Everything they talked about I had already read from other sources of information.
Campus Tour:
Yes - I didn't feel like I saw much of the school. The little that I did see were mostly construction sites within the school. From what I saw, I don't understand how UCSB is called a beautiful sc
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
The tour guides and student workers were very friendly, however, the rest of the student body seemed cold. We were obviously lost, and no one offered to help us. Overall, a bad impression from them.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
I didn't get to meet any of the staff, so I can't comment on that.
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
Half of the school was practically in construction, but the other half, I saw some resemblance of the beauty UCSB is supposed to hold.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
3 - Good
Some buildings looked a little old, but the newer ones were gorgeous.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
We only got to see one model room, but judging from the sample, the rooms are quite roomy.
Security/Safety:
3 - Good
There are a lot of bikes around - and bikes get the right of way. Can be kind of scary. And the college town, Isla Vista, gave me a scary vibe.
Overall Campus Impression:
3 - Good
I wish I got to see more of the campus, rather than spending time on a bus stop. I disliked the fact the campus was in construction. I preferred the part of campus near the beach.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
There were many shops (a bookstore and various restaurants). In my opinion, the area looked a little shady. I hear many students live there and is why the school gets the party school reputation.
City/Town/Community:
I didn't get to visit downtown Santa Barbara, which is 20 minutes away, because we wanted to beat the traffic home.
Campus Visit Notes for University of California-Santa Barbara
Visit Description:
When I first got to the campus, I liked it. It looked like a small community inside gates. My tour guides, one in particular, were extremely cheerful and excitable. They had general knowledge about the school; all of which can be found in literature about the school. I learned nothing new on my trip to UCSB. There are a bunch of minor construction sites within campus, with giant trucks driving around inside. It was a bit dangerous. Also, bikers get the right of way, and with the amount of students who ride their bikes, it can take a while before pedestrians can cross a bike path quickly and safely. For the most part, I was pretty dissatisfied with my visit to UCSB.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Their parking was pretty good. Permits were cheap, and parking lots were clearly marked.
