Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Kind of - I was able to privately meet with an admissions officer who basically talked about the questions I had (he didn't ask too many questions about me, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't
Campus Tour:
Yes - Beautiful campus, fantastic facilities, and a comprehensive tour-guide. The great weather was a plus too!
Classroom Visit:
Yes - Again, kind of - I got to peek into classrooms with my tour guide, but I didn't get to sit in on one. Everything is fairly modern and clean!
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
My tour guide was waving at people left and right! Everyone seemed very friendly.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
The admissions officers especially were very kind and helpful.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
Very modern architecture, lots of grass and palm trees - best of all, not too many roads!
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Nothing I would complain about. Inside especially is very well-kept.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
The 'sample room' was in a dingy little hallway and had pipes on the ceiling, but I'm assuming the actual dorm rooms are a lot nicer. The building itself is quite nice.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Blue lights, own police force (not rent-a-cops), etc. Felt incredibly safe!
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
The campus was amazing, the students were great, and the staff were wonderful!
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
I wasn't a fan of the highway right next to campus, but UMiami isn't in a bad part of town by any means.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see much of Miami, but what I did see was generally good. The Keys are lovely and the skyline is gorgeous. GPS took us through some sketchy parts of town though...
Campus Visit Notes for University of Miami
Visit Description:
I had the opportunity to plan out my visit with an admissions officer, so I got to do a bunch of things. I met with the manager of undergraduate marine science - not an interview, just an info meeting. She was sweet and so helpful! I went on a personal tour of the campus - everyone was out and about and I loved the feel of it (I just had to watch out for the skateboarders!). Homecoming had just occurred so there was a lot of 'Cane spirit still on display.
I also got to meet with an admissions officer - he basically just asked me for my questions; it was very casual and informative. Then he took my mum and I out to lunch at the dining hall - great food (especially the froyo!). Again, very casual, and I had a great time.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
I stayed at the Holiday Inn right across from the University - not too shabby, very convenient.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Ate at Havana Harry's the first night - AMAZING food and easy to get to (especially for a tourist!). Tried Panorama (recommendation from another visit report) - good, but I enjoyed Harry's a
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Checked out a few Miami touristy spots - Cocowalk in Coconut Grove and the Bayside Marketplace in downtown Miami. Cocowalk was a letdown (small, few shops) but Marketplace was really cool.
