Campus Visit Notes for University of Washington Seattle

Visit Description:

We flew to Seattle to visit our daughter's two schools of interest, Seattle University where she has been admitted and Univesity of Washington where she has applied. I went to UW in the 80s as a grad student, so was familiar with the campus (somewhat). We elected to visit SU on Friday and UW on Saturday. In retrospect, I wish that we had found a way to visit both on Saturday, as our visit to UW was very unsatisfying. The day was quite chilly, there were a total of perhaps 10 students visible during the tour, and every building was locked. Yes, the grounds and buildings were stately. Yes, the research opportunities were fascinating. Yes, the tour guide was enthusiastic, extremely well informed, and the information he presented made the campus quite interesting. He did a great job of giving trivia that would not have been in a brochure - it was as good a tour as he could possible have made it. However, not going into a single building was rather a waste of time. Yes, I guess we could have waited around, found a student, and sweet talked them into letting us see (for example) the inside of the dorm, but we didn't. I can't say the tour was a waste of time, but it was quite a contrast to every other college tour we have been on, including other Saturday tours. If you are going to offer a Saturday tour, make it functional.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

We stayed at the Silver Cloud Broadway near SU - nice hotel that offers free shuttle to downtown locations, which we used four times and was great. Fridge in room-grocery store down the street.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

The Pink Door was delicious and fun, Pike Place Chowder in Pacific Place was yummy, and Pagliacci's Pizza was meh.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Really enjoyed visiting the Ave - fun stores and adventure. Easy to get from SU to UW by bus - lots of interaction between the two schools apparently.
