Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - Very informal. I think I did okay though they only told me I had an interview the day before. ~45 minutes.
Information Session:
Yes - Shortened version. Didn't learn much.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Tour guide was pretty good and informative, but went over time limit and didn't get to see a few places.
Classroom Visit:
Yes - Went to two classes - the required CORE and "America in Vietnam." CORE had a decent discussion, but some didn't talk at all. The other was a lecture; boring, but students seemed to like
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
People were very nice, asking where I was from and usually adding "come to Whitman! It's awesome!"
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Most of the profs I met were happy to be around and talk excessively. I saw my interviewer two more times afterwards on campus and I think she forgot who I was.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
Nice and green, but kind of spread out. Had some construction going on. The dorms and insides of all the buildings were clean and comfy, though.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
See above.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
College House was dumpy (old building, bathrooms needed remodeling) compared to the other dorms I saw (Prentiss and the ones closer to the center of campus seemed nicer).
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
Felt very safe, but didn't see any security people or features.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
Comfy place to live - nice food, nice campus, nice people.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
Didn't see much of it, kind of a residential area? I didn't see any resident-looking people around.
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
Only saw the town when driving out to Pasco. Wet, not much happening on a Friday afternoon.
Campus Visit Notes for Whitman College
Visit Description:
I went with the diversity scholarship group and participated in the Fall visitors' day. Pretty fun overall and campus was a plus, but something didn't click with me.
It was colder than I thought; since I hail from California, I'm not used to seasons. Apparently it rains randomly, and did so a bit on Thursday night.
The people there are generally very kind and enthusiastic about Whitman. The host, her dormmates, my tour guide were always waving at people they knew on campus.
Whitman doesn't have much ethnic diversity. It becomes very noticeable. Plus Walla Walla was very rural-feeling (more than an hour's drive to and from Pasco had only farmland and factory scenery). Most people in the group I spoke with are still planning to apply though, just because the Whitman atmosphere was warm and welcoming.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Heard Prentiss has the nicest food; the other two dining halls have the same kitchen and same food. I heard that food wasn't so great. Didn't go out to Walla Walla, so can't comment.
