Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Information went into details about ongoing university expansion (see: http://www.xavier.edu/construction/).
Campus Tour:
Yes - Xavier is updating many dated facilities and is developing new ones.
Classroom Visit:
Yes - Briefly visited many ongoing arts classes in very nice, modern art instruction facilities.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Art department chair and several of her colleagues spent a lot of time with us during our tour of the excellent facilities.
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
Xavier is a nice looking urban campus which is being updated.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
3 - Good
Some areas are better than others. Be sure to visit to make sure your area of interest has decent facilities. Art facilities are some of the best we've seen for a private liberal arts college.
Dormitories:
2 - Fair
Dorm rooms were small, but did have bathrooms w/ showers shared with another room as opposed to a community bathroom.
Security/Safety:
3 - Good
Would have like to have seen more security stations throughout the campus. Remote location of art facilities relative to center of campus is a bit of a concern.
Overall Campus Impression:
3 - Good
Good, but there is a big commitment to make it better. Alumni giving and athletic revenues (Xavier is big in basketball) helps keep expansion goals on track.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair
Area east of campus can be better...it's a bit run down.
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
Campus Visit Notes for Xavier University - Cincinnati
Visit Description:
We were pleasantly surprised at the quality and scholarship of Xavier's art programs (see: http://www.xavier.edu/art/). They have five competent, dedicated and passionate professors with very good facilities. The only area that could have a bit more room dedicated to it was the computer graphic studio/classroom which appeared a bit cramped.
We saw several student exhibits. Their artistry and craftmanship are excellent. Every art student we met was friendly and personable. This clearly came from the leadership example exhibited by the faculty.
One area of concern is that the art facilities are located at the edge of the campus in a somewhat secluded area. This may be a concern for students working late a night on their projects.
If you're considering an majoring in art at the University of Cincinnati, take a look a Xavier as well so that you can compare and contrast.
The Gallagher Student Center (http://www.xavier.edu/gsc/) is 'face-time' ground-zero for the school with a lot of activity and buzz.
The Cintas Center (http://www.cintascenter.com/) represents a major commitment to Xavier basketball. On an enthusiasm scale of 1 to 10, men's basketball is an 11 at Xavier. It's off the charts. Students campout for days in the middle of winter waiting for big-game tickets like the Xavier-Cincinnati University Crosstown Shootout (http://www.crosstownshootout.com/). This event is often covered by ESPN.
