Visit Activities:

Information Session: Yes - Done by one of the deans of admission, good, though he almost ended without giving us any info on admissions process. Spent most of time talking about student life and advantages of open curriculum.

Campus Tour: Yes - Very good, done by rising senior, managed to cram incredible amount of info into 1.5 hour tour. Showed us most facilities, including dorms. Very knowledgeable, answered questions very well.

I like the small, suburban aesthetic, with cohesive architecture and cozy, old-looking interiors with modern amentities, and amherst fits that description perfectly.

Campus Visit Notes for Amherst College

Visit Description:

The tour guides, I found, all have incredible anecdotes about their time at Amherst, especially about the close relationships they develop both with fellow students as well as with the faculty. I went on a Saturday tour, so unfortunately some of the facilities were closed, but my guide had the intiative to run back to the admissions office and get a key to let us in to the gym and other areas. It was also one of the few tours that actually took us inside a dorm room (interesting note, all freshman have 2 room doubles, which is my personal favorite type of dorm arrangement). All the tour guides seemed to have an intimate knowledge of the area and most importantly Amherst itself, having worked in the admissions office most of the summer. They were also very candid in providing information on what they hear being stressed in terms of components of applications, and also in terms of what differentiates Amherst from the other colleges to which is often compared (Brown, Williams, Swarthmore, etc.)

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

We stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in Auburn, about an hour west of Amherst. (Also an hour east of Boston, making our pan-Massachussetts visit bery easy).

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

Antonio's Pizza is a two minute drive north from campus, and very good. But the 5 block area in which Antonio's is located has dozens of good restaurants of every type.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Lots of parking
