Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
The campus is very urban. The Charles River borders the campus on the north. The campus doesn't have a fence around it nor a green.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
The architecture is eclectic. We saw a few Art Deco buildings. The communications building is a former synagogue. There are dozens of brownstones for housing or education.
Dormitories:
5 - Excellent
Dormitories range from the largest dorm in the country to brown stones housing a dozen or so residents.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Students may request someone to walk them back to their dorm room.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Exciting, vibrant location. There is only a little bit of grassy area. The campus is very urban, like Columbia or NYU.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
Lots of brownstones and restaurants. The noise from traffic can be overwhelming.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Boston is the largest college town in the country. This is one of the easiest schools to get to by mass transit. There are lots of opportunities in Boston for internships, culture and recreation.
Campus Visit Notes for Boston University
Visit Description:
BU is the largest school that we visited, and we were prepared to find it impersonal. BU undergraduates may enroll in Communications, Education, Engineering and several other schools as well as Arts and Sciences. Each individual school may be small and the class sizes are usually small. There are activities for diverse interests. Hockey and broom ball are big. There is a small Greek presence on campus, but it is easy to have fun without attending frat parties.
Our tour guide raved about the education, dorms and food.
The information session included information about financial and merit aid. BU gives lots of merit aid.
Parts of the campus reminded me of the Upper East Side of Manhattan or the Village. If you need lots of green space and trees, you won't find it at BU, but there is a park for running bordering the campus.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Hotel Buckminster in Kenmore Square. It is also on convenient for visiting BC and other Boston campuses. They upgraded our room to a suite.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We ate at restaurants near campus. There are lots of choices available, but dining in Boston won't be cheap.
