Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - I attended the following programs: Academic Advising Panel and First-Year Seminar Experience. Both sessions were very informative and faculty members seemed to show deep interest in their fields.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Bay State Road and its charming browstones... simply amazing. And who said BU doesn't have a traditional campus? You got BU Beach behind Marsh Chapel. And Charles River is beautiful.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Some students smiled as they passed during the Towers tour. Also, coming out of the FitRec, this guy hold the door for me and my dad even though we were far away from the door. Courteous people.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
People are approachable. I asked a student representative about the Core Curriculum, and she was kind in explaining me about the Core.
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
Some buildings aren't that aesthetically pleasing, but BU is still nice.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
2 - Fair
The inside of Tsai was a bit disappointing. One of the bathrooms clearly needed some maintenance.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
Most of them are fair (esp. sophomore and freshmen dorms, i.e. Towers and Warren Towers, respectively). But upperclassmen dorms, such as 10 Buick St and the Brownstones are very desirable.
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
Overall Campus Impression:
3 - Good
It was a nice experience. If you're into an urban atmosphere, definitely consider BU. It's not as suffocating as NYU.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
BU is located along CommAve, which is the busiest street in Boston. If you don't mind traffic and noise, then you're fine.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Boston is a charming city full of rich history.
Campus Visit Notes for Boston University
Visit Description:
So far, my experience has been positive. I really like Boston. I showed my dad around BU because I kinda know where buildings are mostly located (Yes, I "studied" the Charles River Map at home). We arrived at BU Central and went to GSU for the Open House. We took a break during the information sessions so we could look around. We started behind the CAS building all the way to Bay State Road. The brownstones are amazing and lots of students were walking around. Then, we went to the BU Bookstore and bought some souvenirs. CommAve was still under construction, so there was a bit of traffic.
What I really liked about BU was the FitRec. It's a very clean and state-of-the-art facility. A funny part of the FitRec tour was when the tour guide showed us a place where a couple students were playing something similar to Broomball, except not on ice. And one of the guys playing said "And this is where you major in Recess" and a couple of us in the group chuckled.
During the Towers tour, there was this Dad who kept on asking questions. I felt sorry for the tour guide, because she seemed to be uncomfortable with the Dad bombarding her with endless questions. I think he was disappointed with BU. He would ask questions such as "So is THIS the common room? It just looks like a hallway that connects to the other side of the building." Yeah, the tour was getting a bid odd. It was half funny and half annoying.
Anyway, a nice experience today. I finished looking around BU just 2 hours ago, so this review is quite "fresh." I don't know if I provided enough info, but if you still crave for more info, PM me. I am no BU expert, but I will definitely try my best to answer your questions :)
Advice: When you cross the street, watch out for reckless drivers.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
I checked in to Lenox Hotel today at around 6AM. Check-in time is 3PM, but the nice concierge still got me and my dad a room. For breakfast, I ate in the hotel's Azure restaurant. Great service.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Newbury Street is 2 blocks away. I am sure you can find many fine restaurants (but expensive). If you crave donuts, Dunkin Donuts is across the hotel.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Use the T. It's quite convenient. Today morning, I struggled to get a pass. I asked for help to a security lady, and she got me a CharlieCard.
