Visit to Bowdoin College in June 2006 by jackson17 (Student, HS Class of 2006)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - I had a very nice and enthusiastic student interview who kept describing Bowdoin as "awesome." Information Session:
No - Didn't have time... Campus Tour:
No - We didn't have an official one, but we walked around a bit and saw a beautiful, well-maintained campus.
Bowdoin College Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
I saw two students, but they were both warm and enthusiastic.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
The receptionists in the admissions office and the librarian were nice and welcoming.
Appearance of Campus: 4 - Very Good -
There was some construction going on, but the campus overall is a beautiful, typical NE campus.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Everything was spotless and well-maintained.
Dormitories: 3 - Good -
Didn't see many, but from the outside they looked like typical college dorms.
Security/Safety: 3 - Good -
I'm not sure if Bowdoin uses the blue light system, but it seemed to be a safe, comfortable campus.
Overall Campus Impression: 3 - Good -
Most of the prospective students were preppy and upper class, so I wonder if most admitted students are that way.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Brunswick seems like a nice little town. The campus is just a block or two away from the main area, but feels personal anyway.
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good -
The town has the usual restaurants and Portland is only an hour away. My interviewer raved about it.
Campus Visit Notes for Bowdoin College:
Visit Description:
I was only there for a short time with my grandmother, so walking was somewhat limited. Overall, I liked Bowdoin and the surrounding area. It's close to the water and has a lot of outdoor programs, which I found intriguing. I also liked the idea of Portland being so close, which apparently has great restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. My interviewer was a double major in government (top-ranked LAC government program in the nation) and visual arts and could not stop raving about Bowdoin. She was nice to set me up with the e-mail address of a friend she thought I might like to talk to, which reflected the general friendliness everyone seemed to show. The campus is very New England and apparently gets COVERED in snow every winter, but I guess that would be true for most colleges in the area. The only thing I might worry about is the lack of diversity, because most prospective students seemed to be white and upper class. I only got to see two actual students, so I could be wrong about that. My interviewer was from Ohio, which makes it seem like Bowdoin is up with regional diversity at least.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We just drove through and didn't stop, sorry.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Same as above
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
The ocean is near and parking near the admissions office was fine early. It got crowded later.
