Information Session:
Yes - Quick and to the point. They went over the basic stuff like the open curriculum and SAT requirements. Pretty run-of-the-mill Campus Tour:
Yes - The tour guide was very enthusiastic and helpful, and he sprinkled the walk with PG-rated traditions and anecdotes for Brown. He seemed to genuinely enjoy being there, and the tour gave off the impression that the campus has intelligent, well-balanced st
Brown University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Students were as friendly as the students on any campus I visited.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
It's a pretty campus. The buildings, with a couple exceptions, were relatively low-lying, older buildings that still seemed to be in good shape. It's clear that Brown is in an urban area, but the campus has great landscaping, and plenty of gre
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
The campus was very well kept, had well manicured lawns, clean streets, etc.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
There are blue light emergency phones positioned throughout campus and I occasionally saw security guards. I never felt unsafe on the campus.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
Brown really stood out in terms of an overall impression. There are a lot of readily accessible resources due to being in Providence, including a college student-oriented strip of road with things like Urban Outfitters, cheap places to eat, etc. The stu
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Brown's on the top of a rather steep hill, so what's within reasonable walking distance is somewhat limited. There's a strip next to the campus that is geared toward college students, and seems like it would suffice for daily needs: runs t
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
Providence seems like a great place to be for college. If you're interested in being in a city without fear of hitting the wrong side of town just three blocks away, Brown seems ideal. There's public transportation and, it seemed, plenty of re
Campus Visit Notes for Brown University:
Visit Description:
After going on campus visiting blitzes, the bucolic campuses were all beginning to blend together. Brown really stood out to me not because of its aesthetic appeal, but because the students and admissions officers stood out. It was the same, droll info. session as everywhere, but it lacked some of the pretention and the bored tone.
The students actually seemed to be having fun. When we tromped through the library, I didn't feel like I'd stumbled upon students who hadn't slept in 4 days (and more importantly, hadn't emerged from the library for 4 days) who were slowly turning into hissing creatures of the night. They were actually enjoying nice weather by being outside, and not all of them hunched over laptops.
I felt like it was a place where you wouldn't be a pariah for not wanting to study hard all week, get drunk on the weekend, and do nothing else.
For some students, though, given the atmosphere and open curriculum, it might be a little TOO much freedom.
