Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Presented by an admissions rep., along with a current Brown student to a large group in the campus chapel. Mainly covered admissions and financial aid, also academics and (briefly) student life
Campus Tour:
Yes - We had the best tour guide I've encountered on any college tour: enthusiastic, friendly & informative. We went inside a few of academic buildings and the dining hall-the rest was outdoors.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
The students that we encountered were pleasant and helpful when we needed directions around campus. Once again, our tourguide was terrific.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
We only interacted with admissions and dining hall staff, who were courteous and cordial.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
The campus looked well-cared for and, once we got somewhat familiar with it, not too hard to get around.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Mostly older, traditional buildings, but they appeared to be very clean and well-maintained.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
On the tour, we were only shown the exteriors of the first-year residence halls, and weren't taken inside. From the outside, they looked somewhat old but in very good condition.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Even though the campus is in the middle of a city, we felt very safe there. Our tourguide pointed out some of the numerous "call boxes" around campus.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
It helped that we visited on a weekday(also on a sunny, pleasant, autumn day). The campus was attractive, easy to get around, and busy with activity.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
The area of Providence surrounding Brown looked fine and well-maintained. We felt comfortable there. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to explore the shops on Thayer St.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Providence had been revitalized several years ago, and it shows with new buildings and businesses. It was easy to get to Brown from the airport in spite of some highway construction on the way.
Campus Visit Notes for Brown University
Visit Description:
Before our visit, Brown was probably my D's dream school and it did not disappoint. The campus is very attractive, the students that we encountered seemed friendly and intelligent. The classes would offer enough of an academic challenge. Another thing D really liked about Brown was the lack of academic distribution requirements. By the time we left, my daughter could definitely picture herself, quite happily, at Brown.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Because, we were also visiting a couple of schools in, and around, Boston later during the weekend, we didn't stay near Providence.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We ate lunch in the campus dining hall, the Sharpe Refectory. There was a nice variety of entrees, salads, sandwiches, drinks and desserts. The items that we had were delicious.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
For a weekday, we lucked out and found parking on the street (parking meter--bring quarters) in front of the chapel (where info sess. was held). Also helps that we went to the morning info session.
