Visit to Brown University in July 2007 by catsushi (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Brown University Campus:
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The campus, in summary, was beautiful. The buildings were so pretty that I couldn't help but sketch one of them. There is even an area with lots of grass, where you can play frisbee or study.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The building that I had class in was extremely clean. The only complaint I had about it was that I was always cold in there, because they would blast the AC the whole time.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The dorms were clean and well kept. The bathrooms sometimes smelled a little funky, and the mattresses were stiff, but we got our own desks and closets so everything balanced out.
Security/Safety: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Like any campus, you have to be careful of the guys that whistle at you or follow you in their car. But the campus itself has a good security system, so I felt safe being there.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The campus by itself seemed to be very lovely. There weren't many Brown students when I was there, so things were generally quiet.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Thayer street has a lot of shops and small places to eat. The store owners are really friendly--the owner of the Indian goods store always gives you free rings and bracelets just for coming in.
City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Downtown is a good place to go shopping and eat good food. However, there are not many activities downtown, if you don't have any money. I heard of some girls taking a taxi to go paintballing, th
Campus Visit Notes for Brown University:
Visit Description: I visited Brown University for a summer camp. I stayed for three weeks and during that time took a class in "Visual Journalism". I had the opportunity to stay in the dorms, eat at the dining halls, and explore Providence. It was a really fun experience!

I can't really comment on what the students are like, since many of them were not there during the summer. Some of our Resident Advisors, however, were students. They were very social and nice to us (but then again, they are paid to be that way), and were able to give us some insight on what the campus life was like with all the students. My RA during that time said that the dorm with all the athletes was pretty fun, or something like that. I got the idea that the campus didn't stress to hard on academics. I think.

The food was actually edible. And I suddenly understand why there is such a thing called "Freshman 15". At the VDub dining hall, I loved the soft serve machine. It was awesome. I had ice cream with every meal. In the morning, you could make your own Belgian waffles. And if you got sick of ice cream, you could have cake. Everyday, there was a different kind of cake. As for the entrees, they had a salad bar and a place to make sandwiches. For dinner, I mostly had noodles. There are other dining halls where you can have breakfast or lunch, too. But the Vdub was my favorite.

When I first came to Brown, I had an impossible time navigating around. I got lost so easily, the campus seemed so huge! But after a while, I was able to understand where everything was. To combat all the ice cream I ate, I did a lot of walking to my class and back because of how big the campus was.

And as for other ways of exercise, Brown has exercise places available. I was disappointed that the pool was closed at the time (because of construction, I think) but I ran on the treadmills and used the bikes instead. There weren't that many people there, and if you got bored you could watch tv while you ran.

In summary, Brown is a pretty awesome campus. Though it may not perfect for me, it might be perfect for you.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: Providence has a lot of places to eat. Downtown, there is a GIGANTIC mall with fancy restaurants scattered about. For more simpler, cheaper options, Thayer's street has other smaller places to ea

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): Every Saturday, Providence has this event called "Water Fire". They light fires on the river by riding gondolas, and they play opera music. It's pretty crowded, and afterwards it's
