Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - There were only 3 students in our info session, so it was very informal and nearly could have been called an interview for the 3 of us.
Information Session:
Yes - Given by a man named Mr. Kavanaugh. Very informative, friendly, gave us good advice about doing our applications. Can't thank him enough.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Tour guide was able to answer questions totally unrelated to her own experiences. She sent me a post card later on, a nice touch.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
I only chatted with a few students besides our tour guide. Usually I wanted to talk to as many as possible, but this campus was very quiet (it was mid-June) with fewer students.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Info session presenter was SUPER helpful by giving great advice on completing applications (not just for Bucknell). Knowledgeable tour guide, bookstore people helpful too.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
Every building was pretty, huge trees shade much of the campus. Some hills too. Loved it!
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
All the buildings are in great shape with well cared for grounds. Clean and bright.
Dormitories:
Didn't see the insides of any.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
This campus felt SO safe. Small town, small campus, very secure feel to it.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Loved it! If you want a large school or big city, this isn't your school. If you want a small, personal, small town experience, then you should visit Bucknell.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Looked fine, but didn't seem to have a lot of bars and shopping if that's something you want.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Coming from a small rural town in Texas, this place captured my heart. We drove around Lewisburg the night before the visit and found it a delightful small town.
Campus Visit Notes for Bucknell University
Visit Description:
Got into town around sunset on Friday, June 13th, (between 8-9pm) to find two police cars at the motel where we were going to stay. Okay, so that made us nervous about staying there, being just Mom and me, but we went inside to ask at the front desk. Turns out a guy had made too much noise in his room and the people in the next one had called the police on him. We figured that since the cops had already BEEN there, things would probably quiet down for the rest of the night. They did. :)
Bucknell was only about 3 blocks from the hotel and we got there plenty early, found a parking spot easily, and just a short walk to the admissions office. The information session was given by a wonderful man named Mr. Kavanaugh and there were only 3 of us students there. The presenter talked about Bucknell, but also gave us LOTS of great advice about how to get ready for college, how to fill out our applications, what to expect, etc. He gave us so much more than just an info session about Bucknell; it was more like an info session about becoming a successful college student. If you're lucky, you'll get a session with him on your visit.
Our tour guide took just me and my mom. Her name was Laura and she answered all my questions, even the ones that were about things she had no experience with herself. It was obvious that she took it seriously and learned all she could to help her visitors. A couple weeks later she sent me a post card. Yeah, others do that too, but she made it feel like a letter from a friend.
The town has a lovely downtown area that looks like it came right out of a storybook or that old Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." If you have time, drive down that street and look at the cute town.
Last month, I emailed the band director at Bucknell since I'm a band nerd. The man replied with VERY friendly emails, encouraging me to visit (can't) this spring. He talked to me about switching from my instruments to a tuba since they don't use the ones I play now. This may not seem like much, but some of the band directors at other schools I've emailed have been abrupt and discouraging, like I'm an inconvenience that's not worth their time. This man was the opposite; he encouraged me and offered a good solution to my situation. If you're a band nerd like me, this might make a difference to you like it did to me.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
I think it was a Roadway Inn. It was on the main road in town and about 3 blocks up the hill from Bucknell. It's not the best, but it was within our budget and convenient.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We didn't eat dinner in this town. Being from Texas, we discovered Dunkin Donuts on this trip and ate there b/c we both liked their coffee. Okay, and the donuts! ;)
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
If you drive down the street that goes along their old-time downtown, be sure to continue across the river. It's so pretty. I think it's the Susquehanna.
