Campus Visit Notes for Carnegie Mellon University

Visit Description:

The day we visited, school was off for fall break (just that one friday :( so it was quiet on campus. No tours/info session but did have interviews. There were a fair number of students around though. Very few women.

Cool and rainy. Definitely nerdier than Hopkins where we were the day before. Felt serious overall. Had the cool white markings on the sidewalk that the robots have to negotiate during their spring festival. Son was impressed with the 7 story physical sciences building. Also has a brand new, state of the art Gates Building dedicated to, you guessed it, computer sciences.

Dorms seemed spread out around the perimeter of the campus. Seemed pretty standard. Beautiful Fine Arts building with lots of character. U Pitt just across the street and it sounded like there's fair amount of mixing back and forth.

Walked in the science building and noticed the profs were in their offices with the door open. Felt friendly. Interesting physics/astronomy posters on the wall.

Nothing spectacular or flashy. Felt very solid, serious and all business. Maybe that's because it was quiet on campus.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

Stayed out in the New Stanton interchange.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

Had good Indian food on campus for $5. Could get made to order sushi also.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Parking lot on site.
