Visit to Colgate University in February 2008 by teardropgalaxy (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session: Yes - The Information Session at Colgate was very helpful! The Admissions Officer was extremely nice and very willing and helpful to answer any and all of our questions.
Campus Tour: Yes - I love the campus of Colgate! The amenities in all the buildings are modern and state of the art. If you are visiting campus be prepared to walk up and down many hills though!
Colgate University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 3 - Good 3 - Good - It was sort of quiet when I visited campus, but that may have been because everyone was coming back from their Spring Break.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Everyone was very friendly! Even the lunch lady. When we got lost parking. I know, sounds ridiculous, but I was not driving, people were very nice when we asked for directions.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - One of the prettiest places ever! If you like the whole semi-woody, old classic looking buildings, Colgate is it. All the buildings match so the campus looks united, not random buildings everywhere.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The buildings were well kept. The grounds were clean and groomed. There were lots of nice lounge areas everywhere from the Admissions Center to one of the main academic buildings.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The dorms were nice and there are many options for 1st year students from singles to rooms w/ 5. Hardwood flooring and medium oak furniture.
Security/Safety: 3 - Good 3 - Good - The campus is set away on a hill from the town, so security is good in the sense of isolation. Also you had to FOB into residence halls but not many of the academic buildings.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Overall I was impressed with the campus. Some campuses only show their nicest looking buildings online but Colgate did not. Visiting in person made me like the campus more.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The back of campus is a medium wooded area. The campus pretty much looks to pristine pond where and main street which is lined by very old oaks and other university housing.
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Even though Hamilton is a small town its not one of those ugly small towns. Overall most of the town has old Victorian/Edwardian era houses that add to the area's classic liberal arts feel.
Campus Visit Notes for Colgate University:
Visit Description: I was not disappointed by my campus visit. Colgate was everything I expected and I wanted from a small rural liberal arts college.

But I want to emphasize SMALL. Because its an hour away from the nearest larger city, which are very still small in the first place, you will be staying on campus a lot. From what I saw, not many people had cars. There are continuous shuttles to the down center, though it is like a 10 minute walk and to and from local airports.

We got to eat lunch there and the food was good, as claimed. But seriously, for residential cafeteria food (I go to a residential high school) it was really good!

It was their first day back from spring break, so that might explain the reason why not many people were smiling. Oh, but when we did go eat the cafeteria, this nice sophomore walked us there. And when we left someone gave us the "Colgate hello."

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: If you plan of visiting book the COLGATE INN. It is right down the street from Colgate, well everything is right down the street, but still, we stayed at some other inn and our room had bed bugs!

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: Don't order a panini from the local Italian restaurant.I sucked and their calzones were also very tiny!

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): Don't be too alarmed if you aren't seeing anything but open windmill land and old farm houses. And country road signs are small and called many things so be on the look out for that.
