Visit to Colgate University in April 2006 by sportsharks (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - The information session was good. Alot of the stuff I found later when looking through the literature, but it was good all the same. Campus Tour:
Yes - The campus tour was excellent. It covered every major part of campus. It brought us through classroom, into a dorm room, and everything else that was needed.
Colgate University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
Everyone was very happy to see the tour group and tons of students were wearing Colgate sweatshirts.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
Didn't really notice anyone unfriendly. This one teacher didn't seem upset at all when a ginormous tour barged into his class then left seconds later.
Appearance of Campus: 3 - Good -
It is a very pretty campus, but was marred by construction near the lake. Overall, very appealing visually though.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Everything was topnotch here. I didn't feel the least bit skeeved out eating there, which is a plus.
Dormitories: 3 - Good -
The were dorms. The rooms looked small, but whose aren't. Average I suppose. The exteriors were nice however.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
I liked it alot. The campus is very small, and I felt I knew it after taking the tour and putzing around for an hour or so.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 1 - Poor -
This is the biggest drawback. I took a ride through town and it really was a drawback. Nothingville, USA. I really don't know how they put Hamilton there as well.
City/Town/Community: 1 - Poor -
See above.
Campus Visit Notes for Colgate University:
Visit Description:
I took this visit during spring break, and despite the long drive from NJ, it was worth it. Colgate is a great school, and the campus is reflective of that. Though its cozy, I never felt like it was too small or got claustrophobic like when I visited Columbia. Overall, I recommend a visit and seriously am considering this school over others that many would say are more "prestigous." A good campus is something grades can't make up for sometimes.
