Visit to Columbia University in April 2008 by rubybrett (Student, HS Class of 2009)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Although very enthusiastic, the speaker was a little too rehearsed. Campus Tour:
Yes - Perfect. We passed by the quad, where a lit-hum class was engaged in philosophical discussion; the library, where one student had fallen asleep on top of his textbook; and the beautiful dining hall.
Columbia University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
The tour guide was friendly; although I didn't engage in any conversations with the students they did not look at all intimidating but instead rather approachable.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
The students who worked in the admissions office were very eager to help me locate various buildings.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
The "quad" was just like that of a rural New England campus- only in the heart of Manhattan.
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good -
The typical blue light system.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
Surprisingly vibrant, although that could just be because I had visited during the first week of spring weather & everyone was outside soaking in the sun.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent -
A multitude of student-budget-friendly stores & restaurants were located on the surrounding streets, and a subway stop practically on campus.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
It's New York City. Enough said.
Campus Visit Notes for Columbia University:
Visit Description:
I was tired after the tour so I spent a few hours lounging on the lawn reading the Spectator (daily newspaper) and listening to the students' conversations; I highly recommend this. Also, I did not get to sit in on a class but I regret not doing so.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
If you want great pizza, go to Koronet's right off campus. (Ask any student; they should know where it is.) The slices are HUGE. And cheap!
