Visit to Columbia University in June 2007 by fruitloops89 (Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
Campus Tour: Yes - The campus is very beautiful. Although it's small, the overall feel is comfortable. The grass was exceptionally green for some reason.
Classroom Visit: Yes - The facilities aren't too bad. It is an ivy league and history has its toll on the buildings. But, upon entering the classroom, one can already feel the history here.
Columbia University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The students were all very respectful and most of them were very happy with their college experience so far. They were willing to answer specific questions regarding their major or classes in general.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The staff was incredible. They were very kind to visiting students and were very open to conversation. You could almost talk to any one of them about anything.
Appearance of Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Appearance from the outside was decent. However, once you step inside, it is absolutely gorgeous. Aside from being a bit small, the environment fosters a great atmosphere for learning.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Now, the dormitories were well maintained, but the fact that the buildings were old made it seem like they were rarely cleaned. Some parts of the buildings were very dusty as well.
Dormitories: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Well... it's New York City isn't it? Overall they're fine, but the bathrooms could get very messy, especially the single dorm ones (John Jay) in which a whole floor of 40 shares one bat
Security/Safety: 3 - Good 3 - Good - It's basically located in spanish harlem. Just don't go walking outside of campus after 12 a.m. But, really you shouldn't be walking around that late anyways or rather that early.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The impression was strong. You immediately sense the history that occurred here. You trust that you'll live comfortably here. Atleast that was the case for me.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good 3 - Good - If you go uptown, it gets a little bit better. But, if you head downtown it gets worse.
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good 3 - Good - There are good and bad people, regardless of where you go. But just choose when you decide to discover your surroundings.
Campus Visit Notes for Columbia University:
Visit Description: If you're like me and enjoy the city life, then you'll absolutely fall in love with columbia. There are always things to do on and off campus and it really is never quiet here. However, if you do plan on getting studying done, you should head over to the Butler library, which has an absolutely gorgeous interior design. Columbia is really a great place to hone your academic abilities and social skills. There were also many enjoyable activities on campus like theater performances and touring the city with your free pass into any museum!

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: Columbia is surrounding by some nice restaurants. It's a great way to grab a bite to eat when you get bored of campus food.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): Transportation of course is very convenient. Right outside campus is a subway station and multiple buses, including a free bus that takes you to the Columbia Medical Center that is more uptown.
