Visit to Dartmouth College in March 2006 by machiavelli (Student, HS Class of 2005)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview: No - My visit came after acceptance, so it was unnecessary. I had a local alumni interview instead.
Campus Tour: Yes - Unofficial tour given by my host, but it was longer, more personal, and we actually went into most of the buildings!
Classroom Visit: Yes - I attended 3 classes in one day! Chem lecture was huge; comparative literature was tiny and quaint; economics class was average size. All three of them had much more prof-student interaction than I'd expected!
Dartmouth College Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - So many students just came up and introduced themselves warmly, chatted, talked about their experiences, etc. Groups of kids simply went out of their way to make me feel welcome!
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - I didn't have much experience with this since the admissions office was closed. But the profs seemed to have great candor with the students. And from my phone experiences, both the admissions and finaid offices were extremely helpful (and friendly wh
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Tons of open spaces and fresh air :D Beautiful buildings and very easy on the eyes.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Maybe because they knew the prospies were coming! Everything was very clean and well-kept-up. Even if some buildings looked a little older, they were still clean. And Baker in particular was immaculate!
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The dorm I stayed in was actually relatively new, so the facilities were great. However, not all of the dorms are that aesthetically pleasing. But even the Choates and River are livable.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - They also have the ubiquitous blue light poles. Don't expect any Hanover gang appearances anytime soon ;P
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Like a beautiful, intellectual, rigorous summer camp!
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The tiny shops are precious! But leave a lot *more* to be desired.
   City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Lovely New England.
Campus Visit Notes for Dartmouth College:
Visit Description: The school is absolutely amazing. Undergraduate focus, beautiful New England locale, (wonderful financial aid,) the students... I had to get over my initial reservations about the tiny town, but in the end it's the actual school that matters, and you're on a lively campus! Everything pretty much met or exceeded my expectations.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: Hanover Inn is expensive but literally 1 second from campus.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: Lou's for breakfast. (And I hear Molly's for lunch/dinner, but I haven't tried it!)

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): I rode a bus from the Manchester airport. There's one from Logan in Boston too.
