Visit to Denison University in April 2008 by callycastaway (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - The info sessions were pretty boring. They presented alot of information, most of which could probably be found on their website or the many pamphlets you will surely get. It was very structered. Campus Tour:
No - The campus is not big. Roaming around on your own is probably just fine. I found that it gave me a better feel of the campus. Classroom Visit:
Yes - Well it wasn't exactley what I expected. The classes were somewhat engaging and relatively small but not tiny. Discussions were encouraged by professors but the students weren't too quick t
Denison University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 3 - Good -
The students were willing to help out if you asked them (direct you to classes, etc.). Willing to talk to you, but most of them were in their own world.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
The faculty members were very willing to talk to visitors about the school, classes, etc. Financial aid and admissions staff VERY nice and helpful.
Appearance of Campus: 3 - Good -
It was nice, but I suppose this time of the year is spring hasnt quite sprung? They were doing alot of gardening. Smelled like it too.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 3 - Good Dormitories: 2 - Fair -
The rooms for freshmen are pretty small. All in all it was pretty plain and kinda sad looking, unless you live in one of the houses. It's up to you to add flair. (some students don't)
Security/Safety: 3 - Good -
It seemed safe, although I never saw any secuirity, even at night.
Overall Campus Impression: 3 - Good -
It seems like a good school academically, its pretty obvious that the sciences are the strong point.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good City/Town/Community: 3 - Good -
Didn't have time to go into granville. I drove through and it seemed ok. It wasn't very pretty and it didn't seem to offer a whole lot.
Campus Visit Notes for Denison University:
Visit Description:
If your looking for alot of diversity of any kind (race, interests or otherwise), this is not the place. Most of the students are form the same part of the country (around Ohio). They seem unaware of the world around them. They aren't very cultured and don't know alot about others and other parts of the country, but they are willing to learn and, in most cases, eager to find out.
Not a great social life. I guess that depends on the friends you make and the stuff you're involved in, that seems to dictate how much fun you have. People pretty much do stuff on campus and most days there seems to be a good deal of stuff going on.
Food was ok.
BEWARE: not only does the school sit on a hill, there are also hills on campus. Get ready to climb.
Also, try not to go on a sunday. It's the day most of them do their homework, so not alot to do and there are not classes to go to.
