Visit to Duke University in February 2008 by chintzy (Parent of Student, HS Class of 2009)
Visit Activities:
   Information Session: Yes - The admissions officer was charming and high energy.
   Campus Tour: Yes - Our guide, a sophomore girl, was very funny and knowledgeable. She didn't take us inside any buildings, except the book store.
Duke University Campus:
   Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Everyone we talked to was friendly and helpful.
   Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The admissions office staff is very helpful, offering pamphlets, maps, directions to eating spots, etc.
   Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Beautiful gothic buildings. Very clean.
   Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - We only saw admissions office and student union. Tour did not go inside any buildings.
   Dormitories: - We weren't allowed inside a dorm for reasons of security.
   Security/Safety: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Blue emergency lights, shuttle buses, emergency lockdown plan.
   Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Freshman are all housed on East Campus, about a mile away from the main campus. Shuttles run frequently
Off-Campus:
   Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Immediately around campus is very typical college town.
   City/Town/Community: 2 - Fair 2 - Fair - Farther out things get a little industrial/dumpy.
Campus Visit Notes for Duke University:
Visit Description: The admissions officer who gave the group presentation was terrific, but she said something that really stuck with us: "I'm sure you're all really talented, bright students, but most of you won't get into Duke, so don't cry about it. You'll find the school that's right for you and have a great experience." It's great advice, but most admissions officers are busy selling you on their school. She seemed to feel Duke didn't need to do that.
