Visit to Emory University in March 2007 by stepherzzz (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - The information session at the end of the day took place in a large stadium. It was very basic and helpful for those who do not know much about Emory. It's a good time to ask questions. Campus Tour:
Yes - My tour guide was very nice and didn't shy away from questions. Tours were broken up into about 5 groups at the beginning because there were so many people. Very good, no technical issues at all. Classroom Visit:
Yes
Emory University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
The students seemed relatively nice, but not quite as much as students at say, a midwestern LAC. Very nice though, they all seemed pleasant and happy.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
It was a little more impersonal than smaller schools, but that's to be expected. Everyone was really professional and eager to help if they could, but they don't go too far out of their way.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
The Emory campus is absolutely stunning- the buildings are marble, for the most part, and the campus was absolutely gorgeous.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Superb.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good -
They were pretty good, but not amazing. Standard, but maybe a bit bigger, and they have sinks. The dorm hallways were cute. Enough space for two. No Princeton-style dorms, but they were sufficient.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
Despite its location in Atlanta, it seems very, very safe.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
I was impressed. It's much larger that the other schools I've looked at and it was a bit more intimidating, though not necessarily in a bad way. There is enough to do for everyone.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Absolutely gorgeous. Lots of good housing in the Druid Hills neighborhood and there is some good shopping and restaurants on the outskirts of town that definitely don't feel like they're inn
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
The part of Atlanta that Emory is in feels like a suburb, but Atlanta is definitely accessible. Very nice. I would not feel scared going off campus alone.
Campus Visit Notes for Emory University:
Visit Description:
Emory is a very beautiful school. It's a great size for many- not too big, not too small. The campis is very large in comparison to a Liberal Arts College, but I'm not sure how it compares to a state university.
You can tell that Emory is a relatively wealthy school. The marble buildings definitely leave an impression, though there is one totally out-of-place building that sort of looks like a weird parking garage. Most of the time you can't even see it, though, and it's not ugly, just strange. The weather is amazing (it's Atlanta) and the area surrounding it does not feel like a stereotypical intimidating (for some) large city.
My tour guide was excellent and very professional. She never forgot what she was going to say and didn't back up into any golf carts. I felt she represented Emory well and was very eager to answer questions. She eased my concerns about Emory being a very conservative school, which was nice.
Overall, Emory had a very nice feeling to it. If you want to have your professors' absolute attention at all times, you might want to look at an LAC. Despite its size, I doubt the students there feel like numbers. Emory definitely felt professional, and all of the students I saw were well-spoken, articulate, and cheerful. There are a lot of typical bleach blonde Polo-wearing Gucci-toting girls (and male counterparts), but it wasn't overwhelming. It seems as though everyone gets along, though I have heard that different races tend to stick together.
I kept hearing great things about Goizueta, the business school, and it sounds like when undergraduates apply (during the end of their sophomore year), most get admitted.
It seems like the campus shares some unity but school spirit isn't terribly overwhelming like it would be at say, Duke. Most students seem incredibly happy to be there, however, and Emory is definitely still a top choice on my list of schools.
