Visit to Emory University in April 2008 by CNYMom (Parent of Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session: Yes - Very informative workshops. Enjoyed the F.A.M.E. representatives (mentoring program) and the Alumni presentation. All questions were taken, but the program moved along on schedule.
Campus Tour: Yes - Very informative tour. Polite and friendly guide. She was on a schedule to get us back for the business school tour and she did a very good job. Interjected some personal experiences - helpful.
Classroom Visit: Yes - Our daughter enjoyed it. Met a couple of other students. I think her time would have been better spent attending only one class and then attending the workshops with us.
Emory University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The students went out of there way to be helpful and informative. Our D felt very comfortable on the campus because of the courtesy shown us.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Very nice. Of course, this was open house.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Beautiful campus, the time of year and nice weather certainly helped. Since she was comparing this to Pepperdine, appearance counted.
   Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Immaculate and beautifully maintained
   Dormitories: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Didn't see an actual dorm.
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Satisfied with what we saw, the students have to use common sense. Most schools put huge emphasis on safety now. Emory campus is more open than Pepperdine - but our D is aware of the concerns.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Over-all very good. The food left a lot to be desired though, and I wish we could have seen an actual dorm room.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - From what we saw, the surrounding neighborhoods looked very upscale and beautiful. Seemed safe.
City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Atlanta is a great city, clean and progressive. Our D had very positive feelings about the area.
Campus Visit Notes for Emory University:
Visit Description: All in all, this was a very positive experience. It was a really nice, long day on campus. Our daughter said that she felt like she had been "marinated" in Emory. And, she came away feeling as though she really knows what she would be getting into. More than the quick 4-hour type tours we've experienced elsewhere.

The campus is really very beautiful and inviting. The business school was the main appeal for her and it was everything we expected and more. She also noticed the dance studio was right in the athletic building and was really nice. This was a very big factor because dancing has been her "sport" of choice since she was 5 and she wants to continue doing something she really loves. She will be able to audition for the dance company and use the dance technique classes to fill both dance company and PE requirements. Also, company rehearsals will give her additional dance time without interferring with her academics.

The food on campus could use some help. We only had lunch and we realize that it was very busy because of open house, but wouldn't you think that they'd want to impress potential students by maybe going the extra distance? That didn't happen. But, the salad bar was pretty good.

The library and computer facilities were very nice. One thing that our daughter really enjoys is studying at our local public library - a totally quiet, comfortable, very cozy place to study. Our tour guide told her that there is such a place on campus - and compared it to the great hall in Harry Potter. Dark wood and all. That was a nice surprise.

We already felt that this school would offer her a superior academic experience, and this campus visit reinforced our desire that she attend Emory -

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: Stayed at a nice Marriott on Century Blvd. Only about 4 or 5 miles away.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: The restaurants we went to were great. One was a brazillian steak house (a lot of fun) and the other was a sushi restaurant (Blue fin?), cool decor, excellent food and very reasonable.
