Visit to Georgetown University in April 2007 by agentbauer (Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview: No - I had already been accepted so there was no need for one.
Information Session: Yes - This trip wasn't a formal GAAP weekend visit. Instead, I spent 3 days on campus living with a friend who's a current freshmen. I did however attend an information session when I visited last
Campus Tour: Yes - Went on both a formal and informal one and found it pretty standard. The campus isn't that big, so it wasn't difficult to cover everything.
Classroom Visit: Yes - Attended 2 Philosophy classes (pretty boring - not because of the professor or the guest lecturer TA but because of my own personal opinion). And also went to an IR class that was pretty interesting.
Georgetown University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Got to interact with students beyond just walking by them. A lot of them were pretty laid back and really nice to me. They treated me no different from a current student.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Didn't talk to the staff 1 on 1, so I can't assess them but their lectures to the class were fine.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Gorgeous. Healy Hall is obviously the most beautiful building on campus and though the library may be a failed attempt at post-modernism, it still serves its function.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - No visible trash in the buildings or the dorms. If you're visiting, Yates Fieldhouse is also a great place to see - indoor track, basketball courts, indoor tennis courts, and a gym!
Dormitories: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - I stayed in Harbin and it's the standard college dorm. I liked the cluster format there since it builds a sense of community but Village C West is pretty sweet too because of personal bathrooms.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - DC has a bad reputation for its crime rate but Georgetown's surrounding area (Wisconsin and M) is really safe. There's a lot of high end shopping to do there and the campus is in its own bub
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Nothing really bad to say. However, the cafeteria, Leo's, is pretty repetitive. The food isn't bad, but I can easily imagine that the food will seem really dull after 2 weeks.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Great places to eat to make up for decent on-campus dining. Places to go include Wisconsin & M and The Tombs as well as the greater DC area.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - There's definitely an elitist feel to the surrounding area because there's a lot of expensive, brand name stores but if you love to shop, you'll be more than fine at Georgetown.
Campus Visit Notes for Georgetown University:
Visit Description: Pretty much explained everything elsewhere, but I should also talk about the Leavey Center a bit. It's a great place to study/hang out with friends as well as some fast-food options (Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, and Subway) if you're on the go. Also there is the campus store to get all your Georgetown gear as well as books. The stuff there is pretty reasonably priced. You can get a T-shirt for about 14 bucks and a sweatshirt for 40 bucks which isn't bad at all in comparison to other university gear. Lastly, there's Vital Vittles, the student-run grocery store. It has the essentials any student needs and is completely run by the Corps, Georgetown and the nation's biggest student-run company. It's a multi-million dollar business!

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: I lived on campus for my second visit but for my first visit over the summer, I stayed at a Holiday Inn around the Georgetown area. Not THAT close to the campus but about a 10-minute drive.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: See above.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): GUTS (Georgetown's transportation system) can get you around the city and the DC Metro system can get you anywhere you want. Taxis are available right outside the front gate, so you don't ne
