Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Well organized slide show, which hits most of the high points.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Excellent tour, though we only saw the inside of one classroom building and the student union.
Classroom Visit:
No - Saw a classroom, but not a class - it was a Saturday. The stuff on the board looked intriguing - hard to tell if it had been a literature or theology class that had been in there.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Lots of people greeted our tourguide and when we arrived students helped with directions.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
The campus was pristine. Lots of red brick, and nice stone building, grass was green, but not too green or perfect. By noon on Saturday quite a few kids out and about and enjoying the beautiful day.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Every building looked well cared for inside and out.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
Appeared nice from the outside our guide seemed happy with them.
Security/Safety:
3 - Good
This is a tough one: there have been several sexual assaults and robberies on campus and students are upset. At least for the former it may be one culprit, but for now it's a bit disturbing.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
I hadn't quite expected the campus to be so multi-level - or for how much of it would be relatively new buildings. It's separate from but adjacent to the city. Best of both worlds.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Despite the crimes mentioned above, this is the fanciest neighborhood in DC. Great shopping and restaurants of every sort nearby.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
I grew up in DC and it's a great town, fantastic museums, wonderful restaurants, all sorts of theater, dance and music, Many free offerings.
Campus Visit Notes for Georgetown University
Visit Description:
My biggest worries about Georgetown were how its Jesuit foundations would play into it's education. I was for the most part favorably impressed. While theology was required - the course offerings to fulfill it include some very interesting courses. (Existentialism and the role of separation of church and state in France was one exmaple.) Still it was clear that Jesuit values and ethics underlie everything - from dumb stuff like banners and mottos on walls, or rather a lot of crucifixes, to having clerics in the dorms. I was impressed though that it was founded from the start to welcome all religions, though I am still not sure how comfortable an out and out atheist would be here.
The location is great, it's very much enclosed so it feels like a safe oasis (perhaps feels too safe), but it's really right next to a lively part of the city. Disadvantages, no metro stop in Georgetown and they are under the airport flight path.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
If your student enrolls there's an on-campus hotel they can stay at.
