Visit to Georgetown University in March 2006 by momof07 (Parent of Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - Not available during that time. Information Session:
Yes - Very dry. Consisted of an admissions officer with a power point presentation. If we hadn't already loved Georgetown based on our previous knowledge of it, we might have been disuaded. Campus Tour:
Yes - Gorgeous campus, although our tour guides were new. Also, signs of campus life, like "Beat Duke" signs in windows and a beer bottle or two in the bushes - but campus was very clean.
Georgetown University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
They were on spring break and it was a Saturday. We did attend a lacrosse game and had a great time. Students there were enthusiastic, as was the local lacrosse community out to see the game.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
Nice greeting in admissions office. Had packet ready for my son with our reservation to attend. Able to answer all our questions, not stuffy at all!
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Beautiful campus that is clean, and also reflects the character of the school.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Nice balance between historical and new facilities. Very clean, but not so clean (I did mention the beer bottle near the dorm steps) that you forget that college students live there!
Dormitories: 5 - Excellent -
What we saw looked great! Some have roof with view of river.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
I would not be afraid to live there at all.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
A wonderful place to study for four years.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Georgetown is wonderful, but expensive.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
Heart of upscale D.C. Very easy to stay in tune with the country and the pulse of D.C.
Campus Visit Notes for Georgetown University:
Visit Description:
We had seen Georgetown before, as we have a friend who is an older Jesuit Priest who teaches there, but this visit was through the eyes of a perspective student, which makes you look at the University differently. The visit made us more sure that as a campus fit, Georgetown could be a wonderful place for our son. Just be prepared for the steps on the tour...Georgetown is on a hill, so there's lots of different levels and lots of going up and down to get from one to another.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We stayed with family on outskirts of D.C.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We ate on campus prior to the lacrosse game - there was a taco bell in a student center.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Finding the admissions office from the parking garage was a little tricky...because of all the ups and downs it was hard to read the map and we got lost.
