Visit to Georgetown University in August 2004 by AnotherAlice (Parent of Student, HS Class of 2005)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Visited in the summer, and there were plenty of people at the session. Very straightforward, talked a little about the Jesuit influence, more about the reputation Campus Tour:
Yes - Had a talkative, upfront guy leading the tour. He talked up thow great it was to live in DC, plenty of bars near campus. Classroom Visit:
No - Classes were not in session
Georgetown University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
We only talked to the tour guide and one of his fellow guides, but they were both informative, friendly and polite
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 3 - Good -
All business and not into small talk.
Appearance of Campus: 3 - Good -
It's a nice, fairly self-enclosed campus with some interesting older buildings. On the walking tour, I didn't get a sense of organization, e.g., quads etc.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 3 - Good -
There seemed to muchsummer activity centering on cleaning, painting, maintenance etc. Our guide took us to a rooftop where we had a view of the city, plus all the empties from the year's drinking
Dormitories: -
Didn't get to see
Security/Safety: -
Since the campus was fairly deserted except for guides and prospective parents/students, I didn't get a sense of this.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
Georgetown is a nice campus, but I think it's biggest asset is its location in DC. If you're interested in politics, foreign relations, etc. it seems like a great place to spend four years.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Georgetown has horrendous traffic, lousy parking, but lots of restaurants, pubs, upscale shopping. Historic townhomes, brick sidewalks. Guide says that upperclassmen find fairly good housing nearby
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
I like DC, though it's pretty hot/humid in the summer. As with all cities, exercise caution, don't venture into nontourist areas unless you are familiar with the neighborhood.
Campus Visit Notes for Georgetown University:
Visit Description:
If you've never been to DC, spend some time visiting the sights. Monuments, museums (most of them free), lots of things to do. DC is a vibrant city that feels pretty safe. I would have liked to visit Georgetown when school was in session to get a better sense of the school.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Georgetown area has limited parking. Unfortunately, there's no Metro stop there, which can make it problematic to get around sometimes.
