Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - Fairly basic - we talked about me, my school work, and extracurriculars for about half the time and then my dad was invited in so we could both ask questions about the school.
Campus Tour:
Yes - We visited during midsems week, so they were a little short on volunteers. As a result, our tour group was a little larger but the guide still did an excellent job and answered all my questions.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Outstanding - our tour guide was extremely friendly, as were the other students we encountered in the cafeteria and around the campus. Almost every student greeted us with a smile or friendly hello.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
The woman at the admissions desk was courteous and helpful, and my dad and I enjoyed a pleasant conversation with an elderly woman who served as "no food goes out" enforcer at the cafeteria
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
The campus is gorgeous - a fantastic combination of historic and modern architecture, as well as beautiful landscaping.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Again, superb. The campus absolutely sparkled.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
Nothing so special here. The dormitories are well maintained but rather small (although I supposed this is to be expected).
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Not a lot to worry about in the middle of Iowa!
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Loved it! Friendly atmosphere, great people and facilities, could easily see myself going there.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
A number of smaller shops and restaurants right around campus, as well as a Wal-Mart a couple miles south (near I-80).
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
Pretty standard small, Midwestern town.
Campus Visit Notes for Grinnell College
Visit Description:
My dad and I arrived about half an hour early for my interview, and used the extra time to wander down to the library and look around. I liked the variety of study areas they had available, especially the "jungle gym" study desks.
After that, I was interviewed by a senior student at Grinnell. The interview was very laid back and seemed to be mostly evaluative. I answered questions about my school curriculum and coursework, in addition to explaining my extracurricular activities and interests. After that, my dad was invited into the room and we were both able to ask the student evaluator questions about Grinnell and her experience there.
They gave us vouchers for lunch in their AMAZING cafeteria. I loved the high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, and my made-to-order stir fry was phenomenal.
We were told that our group for the campus tour was larger than normal on account of it being midsems week, but the group was still only about twelve people. The tour guide was extremely helpful and informative and really helped me get a feel for the college.
