Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - I spoke to an admissions counselor and they pulled up my file and outlined the requirements I had met and possible future academic plans.
Information Session:
Yes - The info sessions I went to included an overview of the campus, clubs, and a financial aid overview. They handed out the basic materials such as brochures and costs.
Campus Tour:
Yes - The campus didn't look like the pictures! But, it was March and there had just been a snowstorm. Nonetheless, the campus looked great.IU has a beautiful in the center of school.
Classroom Visit:
Yes - I had the opportunity to visit 3 classes, psychology and 2 business classes. This was necessary because I want to go into Kelley. My hosts made arrangements and it was a unique experience in lecture
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Overall, I'd say the student body is friendly. However, there were times when everybody seemed to be going out their business. There are droves of people walking between classes.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
The staff was excellent. The faculty introduced themselves to me in the classroom visits. One of them even let me participate in a discussion which was awesome.
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
Campus, as I said earlier wasn't at its best when I visited back in March. But, it looked presentable and students used the campus grounds to sit down on the grass and study, etc.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Overall, the IU campus is well-kept. The buildings look older, but they have consistent style and they are constructing/renovating many academic buildings in the southwest of campus.
Dormitories:
3 - Good
The dorms were alright. They looked pretty old. I heard some dorms don't even have A/C, so that may be a problem during the early fall/spring time.
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
I felt safe on campus. Bloomington is a college town, and I saw security lamps for emergencies. I saw a police walking around, and overall felt safe. Lots of students walking at night.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
IU is an amazing school, with an excellant business program. You meet lots of people and it was an amazing visit.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
It's average. There are numerous houses and apartments surrounding the school.
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
The town itself is average. There is Kirkwood Avenue where lots of bars and little shops are, but it looks pretty boring.
Campus Visit Notes for Indiana University Bloomington
Visit Description:
I went to Indiana University in March 2007 to visit. I was overly impressed and excited about college after that. I had the chance to stay in a dorm(Foster) in Northwest neighborhood. The students are for the most part attractive and friendly. The classes I visited were pretty good. For kids coming from small towns, it may take a bit of adjusting to being in a lecture hall. I went to a Psychology class of maybe 120-150. however, the teacher was clear and the lecture was projected on a huge screen. On the other hand, in my two business classes, their were only 40(Computers in Business) and 20(Biz in Info Age). The teachers were responsive and taught well. They had clear notes and discussions. On the social scene. Students pretty much study for the most part, though I did see some groups go out 10pm and later. So, I guess students study during the day, party at night. Most of the parties I hear are in the frats or off campus, though there are some dorm "parties". The Student Rec Center is great as well. They have 6-8 basketball courts, 12 racquetball/squash courts, good weight room, indoor track, and a pool. You can rent sports equipment for free with student id as well. Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall was a great treat to visit as well.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Stay in Indiana Memorial Union. It's at the center of campus.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
There is a plethora of choices at IU from the food courts(which you will get sick of), bars, Thai Food, Indian Food, Mexican Food, chains like Chipotle, Greek food, and so much more.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
The bus system is great. I used it to go to the College Mall. There are two bus systems. The Campus Bus and Bloomington transit. Both offer lots of routes and are free to students with their card.
